But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.
Job 16:5 (NIV)

Oh, the love that's been lost within us! What did our first love look like? In childlikeness it opened its wings only to be scorched by life's payment and to become caged. We're now stable, untouchable...that's survival. The only problem is that it isn't first love. Does love diminish by degrees? Is it a measure? "You've LEFT your first love" (Rev 2:4). In that case, the solution isn't regaining a measure, but RETURNING to our first love: Jesus. Ann Herring sings: "I believe in dreams now, now that I'm holding You. And I believe in love now; I believe in You." This is first love recaptured. Israel was captive for 70 years and was able to return. Even if our love has been caged that long, we, too, can return. Their song can be our song: "When the Lord brought back the captive ones of Zion, we were like those who dream. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the South. Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy carrying sheaves with him." (Ps 126:1-2a, 3-6) You've paid. Now return. |
