God's Festival of Trumpets
"In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, you shall have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets . . ." (Lev. 23:24).
"In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing the trumpets . . ." (Num. 29:1).
Various forms of religions observe various "holy" days. Some organizations have some thing or some one associated with every day of the year. The Bible records that there are only eight annual days (none of which are associated with "saints") which God calls "my feasts" and "holy sabbaths". Otherwise He says, "I hate, I despise your feast days, and I do not savor your sacred assemblies." (Amos 5:21).
That is a rather strong statement from the One who also says, "I am the Lord, I change not; . . ." (Mal. 3:6). This creates a problem for religious teachers who claim that "It really doesn't make any difference which days we observe." So, whom do we believe? God? The Bible? Or those men and women who say that God wasn't serious and the Bible doesn't really mean what it says? If we are going to believe men, then why do we need the Bible? But if we are going to claim the Bible as our standard of belief, then perhaps we ought to consider what it actually says rather than what others interpret it to say.
Some say that the Festival of Trumpets symbolizes the return of Christ as King over all nations. Some say that Christ will actually return on this day. But if that is true then why would Christ say that "no man" knows the day, not even the angels know, "but my Father only" (Mat. 24:36)?
Announcing A Contract The first mention of a trumpet in scripture is in the context of a covenant (a contract or agreement) between God and man. ". . .if you will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then you shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine. And you shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation." (Ex.19:5-6a).
God made Israel an offer that if they would obey his laws, he would guarantee specific blessings. The offer was a continuation of his promises to their forefathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Ex. 2:23-25).
The Israelites agreed to the terms, "All that the Lord has spoken, we will do. . . ." (Ex.19:8), and a closing date was set.
"And be ready against the third day: for the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai." (v.11).
". . .when the trumpet sounds (a long blast), they shall come up to the mount." (v.13)."And . . . on the third day in the morning, there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that were in the camp trembled.
And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
And mount Sinai was altogether in smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and became louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him by a voice." (vs. 16-19).Some things to notice at this meeting:
1. A three-day period is mentioned in conjunction with the Lord "appearing" to the people (Ex. 19:11).
Christ said that a three-day period was to be the only sign by which to recognize the true Messiah (Mat. 12:38-40). He said he would be "raised again the third day" (Mat. 16:21). Mark has, ". . . and after three days rise again." (Mk.8:31). John says, ". . .and in three days I will raise it up." (Jn.2:18-22).2. No animal sacrifices were required. No priests were involved in facilitating the meeting.
The only requirement was that the people be physically clean (Ex. 19:10, 14-15), which is symbolic of spiritual righteousness (1 Jn. 1:7-9).
Moses led the people to the mountain (v.17). Moses was a (symbolic) type of Christ (Deu. 18:15-17; Acts 3:21-22, 7:37). Moses was not a priest.Although Moses was a Levite, he was not a Levitical priest. The Levitical priesthood was reserved for his brother Aaron and Aaron's descendants (Ex. 28:1). The Levitical priesthood was instituted by God only after the people refused to hear God directly at this first meeting. "And (the people) said unto Moses, You speak with us and we will hear, but let not God speak with us, lest we die." "And the people stood afar off, . . ."(Ex. 20:19, 21a).
The temporal Levitical priesthood and system of animal sacrifice was made obsolete by Christ's becoming our "sacrifice" (Heb. 10:12; 1 Cor. 5:7) and our eternal High Priest at the throne of God (Heb. 4:14, 16; 5:4-6; 7:12; 8:1; 9:11-12).God's original purpose was not to have human intercessors or middlemen called "priest", pastor, bishop, father, reverend or any other official title including 'rabbi' or 'teacher', (Mat. 23:5-10). His original purpose was that all people would have a direct relationship with him. ". . .you shall be unto me a kingdom of priests . . . ". But the people withdrew and "stood afar off" and asked Moses to be in the middle, a "middleman". God obliged this request by instituting a priesthood, but it did not facilitate conversions or improve their attitudes. If it accomplished anything, it was just to provide a buffer zone that prevented some of them from being killed sooner. It was a means, to be used as a physical teacher. The symbolism was to make a point about sin, death, the shedding of blood and the expense (of physical life) to escape eternal death. But the means became an end in itself. By the time of Christ, the majority of priests (politically known as Sadducees) didn't even believe in any life after death (Mat. 22:23).
With Christ's personal sacrifice, the offer of a direct relationship with God our Father was again offered to Israel, and now also to everyone else. "For through (Christ) we both (Jews and gentiles) have access by one Spirit unto the Father."(Eph. 2:18).
3. A loud and long trumpet blast announces the Lord's "appearance" to mankind (Ex. 19:11, 13). This is one reason that some believe that this day primarily pictures Christ's second coming. This is also why some believe that Christ will return on this day.
Trumpets of Mt. Sinai ("We better stop, hey, what's that sound? Everybody look what's going down." ("For What Its Worth", Buffalo Springfield, Stephen Stills,1965).
The account of the Mt. Sinai meeting with God and the events of Revelation mention voices, trumpets and thunders. Did everyone hear all three? Or did different people hear different things, perhaps according to their faith?.
Ex. 19:16-19, ". . . there were thunders and lightnings, . . . and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud: so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.
Moses (a type of Christ) brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God . .
And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.
Ex. 20:18-19, "And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.
And they said unto Moses, Speak you with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. . . ."Perhaps in their fear (a lack of faith), God's voice sounded like a loud trumpet or merely like loud thunder.
V. 22, "And the lord said unto Moses, Thus shall you say unto the children of Israel, You have seen that I have talked with you from heaven."
According to Paul, at least some of them heard the words.
Heb. 12:19-20, "And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them anymore: (For they could not endure that which was commanded, . . ."Trumpets of Revelation's Tribulation John said the voice he heard sounded like a "trumpet talking".
Rev. 4:1, "After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up here, and I will show you things which must be hereafter."
V.5, "And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: . . ."He also heard a voice like "thunder".
Rev. 6:1, "And I saw when the Lamb (Christ) opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts (cherubim) saying, Come and see."
Rev. 14:1, "And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: . . ."There was a dispute over what was heard shortly before Christ's death.
John 12:28-30, (Christ said) "Father, glorify your name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered; others said, An angel spoke to him.
Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes."Revelation includes events with voices, trumpets and thundering.
Rev. 8:1-2, "And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.
And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets."Vs. 5-6, "And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.
And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound."Rev. 11:15, "And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever."
V. 19, "And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament (In case you were wondering where it is.): and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail."
Post-Tribulation Trumpeting Mat. 24:29-31, "Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven (three days and nights of total darkness, Mat. 12:38-40): and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of *heaven to the other."[ *Note: Winds blow on earth, not at God's throne. The word "heaven" here was used for the Greek "ouranos" which means "sky", as in atmosphere above the earth. "And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth , nor on the sea, nor on any tree." Rev. 7:1.]
Recognizing the Thunderous Voice In a parable about a shepherd and sheep, Christ talks about voice recognition.
Jn. 10:11, "I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep".
V.4, "And when he puts forth his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice."Yet, his voice is compared to thunder.
Psa. 29:3-5, "The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thunders: the Lord is upon many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon."
Vs. 6, 8, "The voice of the Lord (causes earthquakes) . . ."
V. 11, "The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace."Other voices from God's throne are also compared to thunder.
Rev. 19:5-6, "And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all you his servants, and you that fear him, both small and great.
And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigns."
The Words of the Seven Thunders Rev. 10:1-4, "And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, . . .
And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roars: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.
And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not."Now we have a specific example of John hearing thunder and recognizing words, ideas, and a message. Since the message was sealed, this account would seem to be of no profit, unless the point for us is to learn to listen even if those around us think it's just the noise of thunder. One day it will be more than just noise for those who are listening.
Job 37:1-5, "At this also my heart trembles, and is moved out of his place.
Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goes out of his mouth.
He directs it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.
After it a voice roars: he thunders with the voice of his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard.
God thunders marvelously with his voice; great things does he, which we cannot comprehend."
'Two' Get Your Attention How do you get two or three million Israelites to all go in the same direction at once? God's answer was to have Moses make two silver trumpets.
"And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,
Make two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shall you make them: . . . " (Num. 10:1-2).These were to be used for:
1. Calling for them to assemble at the Tabernacle, Num. 10:2.2. Signalling them to move camp, Num. 10:2.
3. To announce Israel's going to war, Num. 10:9. [For example, when Israel went in to settle Canaan, the natives (who through their idolatry had forfeited their right to the land) refused to leave peacefully.]
4. "In the days of your gladness" (special celebrations of rejoicing before God), Num. 10:10. [Trumpets announced "the year of jubilee" on the day of Atonement, in the fiftieth year. This year was a land-rest year. People "rested" from sowing and reaping. All indentured servants and slaves had the option of freedom if they wanted it. All mortgaged lands reverted back to the original owners. Lev. 25:8-17]
5. "In your solemn days", (the festivals of God) [Note: the four Hebrew words translated as "solemn" mean "festival, feast, holiday and celebration" as in "giddy". None of them means "somber", "doleful", "mournful" or "sad", not even for Passover or Atonement.]
6. "In the beginnings of your months", Num. 10:10. [These were not festivals or "sabbaths" and there was no command to keep these days holy, (except for the day of Trumpets, 1st day of 7th month). There was no work prohibition for these days and no commanded assembly. The priests however did have to offer a sacrifice on the first day of each month, in addition to the daily morning and evening sacrifices. Num. 28:11-15.]
For these last three occasions, the trumpets were blown "over the burnt offerings and peace offerings". The purpose, according to God, was that the sound of the trumpets was a memorial of the fact that, "I am the Lord your God." Num. 10:10.7. Ezekiel's message from God includes the use of the trumpet as an alarm for danger.
(Eze. 33:1-6). Had Israel been obedient to God's laws, this would have been unnecessary as God promised to fight their battles for them. Had Israel been obedient, God would not have brought enemies against them to oppress them and carry them into captivity. For the significance of "two", see 'two witnesses required for the death penalty', Deu.
17:6-7; to establish truth in a matter, Deu. 19:15; to correct a brother who sins, Mat. 18:16; and "the two witnesses" of Rev. 11:3-13.
"The Magnificent Seven" What's the best way to attack a heavily fortified position? Answer, remove the fortifications. Better yet, let God do that for you. Seven trumpets sounded and the walls of Jericho fell flat.
Backing up for a moment. When Noah got off his boat, the whole world (all eight people still alive) worshipped God (probably). But starting with the very next generation (Noah's grandson) things went downhill fast (Gen. 9;18-27) By the time of Abraham, most were involved in some form of idolatry. According to God, when you are wicked, you forfeit the privilege to possess any land (Lev. 18:1-30).
The first resistance to Israel's settling the land was the city of Jericho. Each city controlled all the land around it. They locked the gates and waited for Israel to attack. Instead of attacking a walled city, God told Joshua to organize seven trumpeters. They marched one lap around the city on each of six days, blowing the trumpets. The natives could have left alive at any time. On the seventh day, the Israelites marched around the city seven times blowing the trumpets. On the seventh lap, they made a "long blast", the people made a "great shout" and the walls of the city fell flat. The Israelites killed the inhabitants and burned the place, but for all practical purposes, after the trumpets and the shout, the kingdoms of Canaan became the kingdom of Israel (Josh. 6).
In Revelation there are seven trumpets (Rev. 8-11), followed by "great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ: and he shall reign for ever and ever." (Rev.11:15).

When they exposed the torches and sounded the trumpets, the Midianites, in the darkness and confusion began killing one another resulting in the deaths of 120,000. Only 15,000 escaped. The other tribes of Israel rallied and together with Gideon's small group, pursued them out of the land past the Jordan river. (Judg. 7:16-8:13).
This was a fulfillment of God's promises of Lev. 26 and Deu. 28:7.
"If you walk in my statutes and keep my commandments, and do them;
And you shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword.

Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air . . ."John describes this experience. ". . . I looked and behold, a door was opened in heaven; and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up here, and I will show you the things which must be hereafter.
And immediately I was in the spirit: . . ." (and he describes his vision of God's throne and those around it.). Rev. 4:1-11.Conclusion "We better stop, hey, what's that sound? Everybody look what's going down." ("For What Its Worth", Buffalo Springfield, Stephen Stills,1965).
"Listen, up in the sky! It's thunder! No, it's the sound of a trumpet! No, it's the voice of . . . an Archangel!!!" You were expecting . . . Superman? Well, in a way it is. Only he calls himself the Son-of-man.
God commanded the feast of Trumpets as one of his holy feast days, a sabbath to be observed forever. He commanded that we observe it and to teach our children the meaning of it. To understand it fully, requires knowledge of it historically and understanding it prophetically.
