Gavroche's FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

My name isn't Gavroche. Gavroche is a character in Victor Hugo's, Les Miserables. My name is John Newmark. If you read on, you will find out more about me than you probably ever wanted to know. Don't forget to look at the pictures of my niece. She is as cute as a button. (And I never realized how cute buttons were before she came into my life.)

I was born Jan 21, 1969, at 12:05 pm. A few minutes after a complete twenty four hours had elapsed in the Nixon Administration. My parents are superstious sorts and were kind of hoping all three of their children would be born under the sign of a Democratic President, but alas, that was not to be. It didn't matter, though. Just as Nixon appointed some extremely liberal Justices, I was one of many Liberal children born in 1969. I was born in St. Louis, Missouri.

I have written in a variety of mediums. All three of my collections of poetry: Poems (1994), Spiced Wine (1995), and Friends of the ABC (1998). are critically acclaimed. (These critics, though, shall go nameless.) Some poetry and essays I have written have appeared in the webzine Tribal Soul Kitchen. I am a member of Writers Under The Arch, a local writers group that has published several collections of its own. I wrote a weekly political column in the Grinnell College S&B (Scarlet and Black) for one year, and several articles as Feature's Editor the next. An article of mine also appeared in Alternative Magazine, a now defunct electronic journal, in it's 1988 issue. I published one short story in the fanzine, Undiscovered Worlds, "What Would You Do if You Knew You Could Bring World Peace By Killing A Monarch Butterfly?" I am presently working on a science fiction novel that should take the world by storm.

In addition to appearing in the chorus of several off-off-off-off Broadway productions, primarily during the high school years, I also appeared on the small screen several times. A now hard-to-find special that aired in 1994 featured me reading poetry. Other performances include local television fundraisers, most notably the Jerry Lewis Telathon, and the local public station pledge drives. While not televised, after a public performance of my poetry on May 1, 1998, there is no question the audience, while a little "wobbly," was a "group united." (Sure, they were united beforehand, so?)

In 1987 I appeared for five minutes on the local news as they highlighted some accomplishments of mine they felt were extraordinary.
