DEFEAT

A Poem by Laurence David Sterling III

It is a new experience for me This surrender without honor Valiantly I held against great odds Bravely I stood where others have fallen Twice the battle went my way Thrice it turned against me I have fought the good fight I wounded and was wounded Yet, in the end, I fail Under the banner of white I stand to await my fate Losing all that I have known All I wished to know I am without earthly hope In a land without forgiveness Among people who cannot love A servant among slaves Shall I be dashed upon a rock Cut down once and for all Hopeless, faithless, loveless Lord of Mercy You alone are my salvation In this savage land
