Parting

A Poem by Laurence David Sterling III

The split in the road came where it was expected, In the midst of fields not yet planted, Therefore, never to be harvested. We knew that this was the place, Where we would be no more. From that point forward, We would be you and I again. Once one, now forever two. It was not a question of it being the correct course, Two rights never make a wrong. We would both be left with memories. It was the parting that brought the sorrow, Not the knowledge of what lay behind, Not the fear of what lay ahead. In those moments of sweet embraces, Hands shaking as we said good-bye, We wished we did not mean the sad farewells, But we knew, And at some level understood, The split in the road came where it was expected, In the midst of fields not yet planted, Therefore, never to be harvested.
