Job Posting # 1
Posted February, 1999: My wife and I will be permanently relocating to the States in July. I am volunteering to help the Director of my department (Applied Foreign Languages) locate a teacher as my replacement. Thank you for your interest in The position of teacher in the Applied Foreign Languages Department of Transworld Junior College of Business, in Tou Liu, Taiwan. Please forward a formal resume' or CV which I could give to the Director of our department, and it will be most helpful.
In the meantime, here is some info which may be of interest. When considering the following information, please note that I am a native speaker of English, and my degree is a Master's in Economics. Master's in TESOL or related, or doctorate degree are preferable to Transworld:
My base salary is around $50,000 TWD per month, which at this morning's exchange rates is approx. $1,700 US. However, there is much good news. First, I am making considerably more than that, since I am the only native English speaker at Transworld. My teaching load is a full 20 hours (17 hours of which are conversation courses, plus one reading course), so I am currently making perhaps US $2,200 per month. In addition, Transworld is quite eager to retain native speakers. I think that salary increases are not at all unlikely. I was recently given an additional housing allowance, plus the promise of a plane ticket to the States once a year. Finally, all Taiwanese employees receive bonuses at Chinese New Year's.
Transworld Junior College of Business will become a full-fledged College within two years, and a University within five. I expect that salaries will be adjusted accordingly.
Your experience and degrees may be a negotiating point, as well.
The atmosphere here is pleasant. Tou Liu is not plagued by the pollution and traffic problems which are common in Taiwan. My morning drive to work is quite pleasant. The students at Tou Liu are considerably more repectful than American students. Though Taiwan is hot in the summer, Tou Liu is not nearly as humid as Taipei, and rainfall is quite uncommon.
If the above sounds interesting to you, please respond. I will forward a copy of your resume to my Director.
As an additional note: Unfortunately, Taiwanese law mandates that all teachers at the Junior College level or above must possess at least a Master's Degree.
Taiwan is wide open for people who wish to work in "cram schools" or bu xi ban. Here are some links which you may find useful, should you choose to pursue that option:
