1 August 1209
The Crusader Army arrived at Carcassonne. By this time the city was packed with refugees and supplies were running low. Leaders from both sides soon reached a negotiated settlement. By surrendering, the lives of all the citizens were spared and they were allowed to leave the city "bearing only their sins".

The last known French Cathar was burned at the stake.
