The "Monteforte heretics" were brought here from their castle near Turin for questioning by a committee of leading citizens, headed by the Archbishop. They soon revealed their odd beliefs: vegetarianism, disbelief in a literal interpretation of the Bible, rejection of marriage and rejection of materialism. All were eventually burned at the stake.

The remains of a woman named Guglielma, who had died in 1281, were dug up by the Inquisition and her bones burned after it was learned that her followers revered her as an incarnation of the Holy Spirit.
