Balthasar Hubmaier sought refuge here. He soon converted Lutheran minister Oswald Glaidt and Lord Leonard of Liechtenstein to Anabaptism.


1527

May 1527
Hans Hut arrived in town. He and Balthasar Hubmaier engaged in a debate in the city church that became known as the "Nikolsburg Disputation." This was followed by a private debate in the castle before Lord Leonard (who was an Anabaptist). Hubmaier was declared the "winner" of the debate and Lord Leonard threw Hans Hut in jail.

24 June 1527
Balthasar Hubmaier wrote On the Sword, his final work. It was printed here by Simprecht Sorg (Froschauer) of Basel, who came to Nikolsburg with Hubmaier a year earlier.


1719

The Jewish section of the city was completely destroyed by fire.
