Jan Amos Komensky (Comenius) was born. His parents belonged to the Unity of Brethren (later to become the Moravians).

John Amos Comenius was orphaned by a plague, which also claimed the lives of two of his sisters. He was sent to Strassnitz to live with his aunt.
