Gerard Segarelli, a shopkeeper, gave up his material possessions to found a group called the Apostolic Brethren. Segarelli and his followers roamed the streets yelling "Do penance." The Catholic authorities responded with increasing persecution, resulting in Segarelli's imprisonment in 1294.
