A young Hutterite named Hans Mandel was held prisoner here for 26 weeks, during which time he was beaten with rods. Mandel was able to escape one day when his jailer forgot to lock the prison door properly. Mandel was free, but 7 years later he was in prison again, this time in Landeck, Austria.
