JEHOVAH'S WITNESS DIES REFUSING BLOOD TRANSFUSION
This recent article is by Adrian McGregor, from "The Australian"
newspaper. It is a sad article that continues to remind us of
the influence - even to death - that a cult has on its members.
A 26-year-old married Jehovah's Witness woman has died in a
Brisbane hospital after signing medical consent forms refusing
blood transfusions that would have extended her life.
The distressed family of the woman, who was strong in her
convictions, have requested that she remain anonymous.
The woman, who died in the Princess Alexandra hospital last
week, had been ill in the renal unit and staff had been alerted
to her request to receive no blood or blood products.
The woman's death coincides with a 20-year-old Jehovah's
Witness woman's application in Melbourne last week for leave to
appeal to the High Court challenging a court ruling that overrode
her verbal request not to receive a blood transfusion, which
subsequently saved her life.
A Jehovah's Witness hospital liason officer, Dale Irwin, said
the Brisbane woman who died would have had a medical directive
alert card filled out, indicating her wishes to receive no blood
components. She would also have signed a refusal-to-permit-
blood-transfusion form, duly witnessed, which made it
technically a legal document.
"She had been in hospital, lingering for quite some time
with many complications, so all those things would have been in
place," he said.
The vice-president of the Australian Medical Association,
Sandra Hacker, said that once such documents were signed, if
medical staff acted contrary to them it constituted an assault
upon the patient. Queensland has about 15,000 Jehovah's
Witnesses - half of them in the south-east corner of the State -
for whom Princess Alexandra has become the hospital of choice
because of its history of respecting their religious wishes.
Hospital medical superintendent Michael Cleary said that, with
such a large number of Witnesses attending, the hospital
regularly had to confront the issue of blood transfusions.
Mr Irwin said that in crises, even after directives had been
signed, senior medical staff would often run the request past
the sick patient again.
"Very kindly, very sincerely and with the best of motives,
they'll say: 'Look, are you still definitely of the opinion
that you won't accept a blood transfusion?'"

PUZZLE - CAN YOU FIND 18 BOOKS OF THE BIBLE?
I once made a remark about the hidden books of the bible. It
was a lulu, kept people looking so hard for facts and for others
it was a revelation. Some were in a jam. Especially since the
name of the books were not capitalized. But the truth finally
struck home to numbers of readers. To others, it was a real job.
We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes,
there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require
judges to help them. I will quickly admit it usually takes a
minister to find one of them, and there will be loud lamentations
when it is found. A little lady says she brews a cup of tea so
she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax
now for there really are eighteen names of books of the Bible in
this study. You may use a computer that has: CD-Rom, ANSI
graphics, and other pheripherals. You almost have to be a pro;
verbs, adjectives and nouns are interspersed thoughout the text.

JOKE - HEAVENLY RATES
A man dies and goes to heaven. Of course, St. Peter meets him at
the pearly gates. St. Peter says, "Here's how it works. You need
100 points to make it into heaven. You tell me all the good
things you've done, and I give you a certain number of points for
each item, depending on how good it was. When you reach 100
points, you get in."
"Okay," the man says, "I was married to the same woman for 50
years and never cheated on her, even in my heart."
"That's wonderful," says St. Peter, "that's worth three points!"
"Three points?" he says. "Well, I attended church all my life and
supported its ministry with my tithe and service."
"Terrific!" says St. Peter, "that's certainly worth a point."
"One point? Golly. How about this: I started a soup kitchen in
my city and worked in a shelter for homeless veterans."
"Fantastic, that's good for two more points," he says.
"TWO POINTS!!" the man cries, "At this rate the only way I get
into heaven is by the grace of God!"
"That's right! Now you have got it!" said St. Peter.
For it is BY GRACE YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED, THROUGH FAITH -- and this
not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- NOT BY WORKS, so
that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).
