1. Daniel TILLOTSON. Born on 25 Mar 1796 in Lee, Berkshire County, MA. Daniel died in Brunswick, Medina County, OH on 3 Jun 1863; he was 67.
He was born in 1796 and was about 19 years old when the family came to Ohio. In the early years the Indians were friendly and game was plentiful. One time Dan killed a bear with a flail and he also killed a doe and her fawn with one bullet shooting while standing in his barn door. A flail is normally used to thresh wheat by hitting the grain to loosen the chaf from the wheat kernal. How he killed a bear with it requires more information. Grant Tillotson reports that his grandfather's farm had a tannery and also a distillery. Grant was a prohibitionist and was not happy about the previous existence of a distillery on his farm. Grant did like the land, however, and noted, "We had one of the most sightly places in Brunswick, being atop of a hill, and affording a distant view to the west and north." We visited the farm in July 1995 and we also admired the view. The area is quite built up now but the view away from the road towards the valley contains the orchards of the Eyssen family and wooded land beyond. It must look fairly similar to the way it looked in the early days of Brunswick.
Daniel was a farmer who had attended the district schools. He was a Democrat. During the War of 1812 he was a Minute Man and later was a Captain of the militia in Ohio. (Tillotson Gen) He was known as Capt. Dan. Uncle Dan owned the farm he had purchased from his father, Samuel, in 1822 on what is now Pearl Road (Route 42). In 1858 he was 62 years old and Olive was 49. The only child left at home was 23 year old Darius.
In 1830 the family picture is confusing. The U.S. Census for Brunswick shows a 30-40 year old male who would be 34 year old Daniel. There is a 40-50 year old woman who is not known and a 20-30 year old female who would be 23 year old wife Harriet. There is a 5-10 year old male who must be Lucius, although he really should have been listed as under 5. The question concerns a 10-15 year old male. The 5-10 year old female would be Mary Emeline.
In 1840 the Census shows six family members. There was Dan, now 44 years old, and third wife, Olive, aged 30-40 years. There appear to be four children including Darius, under 10, Lucius, 15-20, and Triphena, aged 5-10, and Mary Emeline aged 15-20.
The 1850 Census shows a reduced family. Daniel was now aged 54 and his farm was valued at $2300. Olive was 41 years old. Lucius was now 24 years old and must have moved away. Triphena was18 and had married Bill W. Freese on 22 May 1848 at age 16. Darius was now 15 and was listed as a farmer helping his father. Another 15 year old lad, George E. Goodrich, was living with the family and working as a farmer. George and his wife, Rebecca, are mentioned in Jane's diary. They were neighbors and good friends.
The 1860 Census shows 64 year old Daniel but he was a widower at this point since Olive had died in 1859 and he did not marry Sally until 1862. The farm is now worth $3600. Darius was now a 25 year old farm hand. Later that year he would marry Louisa O. Peck on 6 December 1860, his 26th birthday.
Dan was married four times. His first wife was Tryphen Hulet, probably the daughter of John Hulet, one of the early settlers of Brunswick. She died in 1829. At the end of 1829 Dan married Harriet Turner, the daugher of _ and Ruth (Adams) Turner. Harriet died in January 1831 and two months later he married her sister Olive. Olive was Dan's wife at this time. Why Jane would say she went to Uncle Dan's and washed for Aunt Elmira is unclear. Perhaps her handwritting was unclear and she really wrote Olive or perhaps she had a mental lapse and wrote the name of another aunt, wife of her Uncle Zadock. Anyway, she did the wash for Aunt Olive. Olive died in 1859 and Dan then married a third Turner sister, Sally, in 1862.
Jane never knew her Aunt Triphena or Aunt Harriet because they died before Jane was born. Jane grew up knowing her Aunt Olive since she did not die until 1859 when Jane was about 25.
He first married Tryphena HULET, on 23 Nov 1820 in Brunswick, Medina County, OH. Born on 4 Oct 1797. Tryphena died in probably Brunswick, OH age 31 on 6 Apr 1829; she was 31.

3 ii. Franklin (1824-1900)
4 iii. Lucius (1826-1828)
He second married Harriet TURNER, daughter of ? TURNER & Ruth ADAMS, on 2 Dec 1829. Born on 31 Aug 1807. Harriet died in probably Brunswick, OH age 23 on 5 Jan 1831; she was 23.
He third married Olive TURNER, daughter of ? TURNER & Ruth ADAMS, on 6 Mar 1831.[1] Born on 5 Mar 1809 in Stockbridge, MA. Olive died in probably Brunswick, OH age 50 on 4 Mar 1859; she was 49.

Buried in Crete, Will Co, IL.[4] She was from Medina County, OH.
Franklin Tillotson appears in the 1850 U.S. Census for Brunswick when he was 25 years old. Jane was 22 and Francis was one year old. His farm was worth $1400. They moved to Michigan 1853. Frank Tillotson became the first Postmaster on 14 May 1857 of Elsie, Michigan. The town was named after his daughter who was the first child born in Elsie. Other members of the family moved to the Elsie area soon after. He was a farmer and attended the district schools. He was a Republican. By 1867 they had moved to Crete, Ill where Frank and Jane lived until their deaths.
Pib Burns notes that there is no marriage record in Medina County - the date is correct but the marriage may have taken place somewhere else.[5] He also notes that they moved to Duplain, MI in 1852 and helped found the town of Elsie. They moved from Elsie to Crete, IL in 1865.
On 14 May 1857 he was appointed the first postmaster for Elsie. The town was named for the first white child born in the village, Franklin's daughter, Elsie. (History of Clinton County, MI, 1980, p751)
A Franklin Tillotson also served as postmaster of Elsie from 16 May 1872 to 18 Aug 1876. (History of Clinton County, Michigan, 1908, p752) This must be one of the other Franklin Tillotsons.

She died at 8 AM after an illness which caused a lot of suffering. Dates of birth and death from tombstone. She married Bill (Billy) Williams, Jr. FREESE, son of Bill (Billy) Williams FREESE & Sally, on 22 May 1848 in Medina Co, OH.[8] Born on 8 May 1826 in Brunswick, Medina County, OH.[7] Bill (Billy) Williams, Jr. died in Brunswick, Medina County, OH on 20 Apr 1898; he was 71.[7] Buried in Westview Cemetery, Brunswick, OH. According to Medina County Marriage Records vol B, page 187 they were married by S.J. Hayslip, P.P.
In 1848 when she was only 16 she married Bill Williams Freese, jr. of Brunswick. Triphena was two years older than Jane and was another of her close cousins. On 11 Apr 1849 Triphena and Billy moved to Olmstead, OH. Her spinning wheel was especially important to her and she made yarn for knitting and for cloth worn by all her family. In Oct 1850 they came back to Brunswick and settled on a farm one mile from Triphena's birthplace and they lived there until she died in 1896. By 1858 the Freese's had three children ranging in age from six to one. Triphena was baptized into the Baptist Church at Beebetown in 1866.
Tryphena was born at Brunswick on 19 May 1832 and married Bill W. Freese on 22 May 1848(MCMR, vol B, p 187). Tryphena is mentioned only a few times but Bill is mentioned more often. Triphena was a Free Will Baptist at the Beebetown Church.

6. Darius Francis (Dry) TILLOTSON. Born on 6 Dec 1834 in Brunswick, Medina County, OH.[3] Darius Francis (Dry) died in Brunswick, Medina County, OH on 10 Mar 1925; he was 90.[7] Buried in Westview Cemetery, Brunswick, OH. He first married Louisa Orinda (Tim) PECK, daughter of Willys PECK & Sally M. POTTER, on 6 Dec 1860 in Medina County, OH.[9] Born on 7 Aug 1834 in Brunswick, Medina County, OH. Louisa Orinda (Tim) died in Brunswick, Medina County, OH age 40 on 14 Oct 1874; she was 40.[7] Her tombstone gives her name as Orinda.
According to the manuscript Tillotson Genealogy he died "in the old house" which would be the farmhouse of Daniel Tillotson.
I am convinced that Darius Francis Tillotson is the person referred to as Dry by Jane in her diary. The conclusion is drawn from an examination of the diary entries mentioning him. He is mentioned either alone or with a variety of people in the 1858 diary. In the 1861 and 1864 diaries he is almost invariably mentioned in tandem with Tim, whom I now believe was Darius' wife, Louisa Peck. Darius married Louisa in 1860. There are also a number of references which indicate that Dry lived close by and was probably a member of the Daniel Tillotson family. In fact, the Daniel Tillotson family lived virtually next door to the Leonard Tillotson family in the period 1850-1860. There is no way I can prove this, but there are no entries which would cast doubt on this thesis and a number which seem to support it. Darius was Jane's age and lived nearby. Jane has a clear tendency in the diaries to give pet names to close relatives and special friends.
Darius was a farmer, Methodist, and Democrat.(Tillotson Gen) According to a page from the Brunswick M.E. Church dated 1896-7 he is listed as D.F. Tillotson, one of the Trustees of the Church parsonage. The document lists church members and the amount each was assessed to help settle the church's debts. He and his wife, Emma, were assessed 22¢ a week, or $11.00, for the year.
Was his second wife the same Emma Morton whom Jane mentions as winning a spelling contest on December 14, 1858?
Dry and Tim appear to be just about Jane's best friends, appearing many times in the diary sharing work and recreation.
They had one child:
28 i. Grant Eugene (1865-1937)
He second married Emma A. MORTON, daughter of John Wesley MORTON & Abigail HALL, on 6 Sep 1876 in Medina County, OH. Born on 7 Jan 1844. Emma A. died in Brunswick, Medina County, OH age 40 on 24 Oct 1916; she was 72.[7] Buried in Westview Cemetery, Brunswick, OH.
