Leonard Tillotson Family

1. Leonard TILLOTSON. Born on 11 Mar 1802 in Tyringham, Berkshire county, MA. Leonard died in Brunswick, Medina County, OH on 1 Dec 1862; he was 60.[1] He married Mary C. THOMAS, daughter of Cornelius Or Seth THOMAS & Susanna COSSETT (26 Oct 1770-), on 27 Feb 1825 in Liverpool, Medina County, OH. Born on 14 Aug 1805 in Waterbury, West Haven, New Haven, CT. Mary C. died in Elsie, Clinton Co, MI age 84 years 5 mos 4 days on 18 Jan 1890; she was 84.[1],[2] Buried in Elsie Village Cemetery, Elsie, MI Lot 420.[3] A photo memorial in a family photo album gives her age at death as 84 yrs. 5 mos and 4 days. She came with her parents to Medina County in 1816. Tillotson Project gives place of birth as Waterbury, CT.

He was about 13 when the family came to Ohio and he must have participated in the cutting of the trees for the first cabin. He bought land adjoining the Dan Tillotson farm from Samuel at some point. This would be the farm which Jane knew as home when she was growing up. Her friends seem to come from the area near Uncle Dan rather than people living near Uncle Zadock. Leonard's farm was just north of Daniel's. Leonard was a farmer and was probably a member of the Sons of Temperance which was formed in Brunswick in 1854. This was perhaps the "Lodge" Jane mentions her father went to most Saturday nights. A number of the Tillotsons were described as prohibitionists and Leonard was probably one of them.

Leonard was a farmer educated in the district schools. He was a Republican.

Leonard Tillotson's Will is given in Medina County Will Records, Vol B 1862-1871, pages 49-50.

The Thomas' were an early family in Liverpool as were the Cossetts. Moses Deming, one of the founders of Liverpool, writes that the John Cossett and John Cossett, jr. family was one of the first families to settle. John Cossett was the son of Rene Cossett who had come from Paris, France where he was born about 1690. Rene Cossett first went to Three Rivers in Upper Canada and then came to New Haven, Connecticut where he met Ruth Porter, daughter of Dr. Preserved Porter. He fell in love with Ruth but she would not marry him unless he converted to Protestantism and agreed never to move back to France. He did both, joining the Episcopal Church and settling in Connecticut. His son John, Mary's grandfather, made the strenuous pioneer journey to Ohio at age 79 and died at Liverpool in 1816 at the age of 81.

Leonard and Mary had the following children:

2 i. William Thomas (Will) (1826-1901)
