1. Samuel TILLOTSON. Born on 23 Mar 1792 in Tyringham, Berkshire County, MA.[1] Samuel died of sunstroke in Otis, MA on 31 Aug 1869; he was 77.[1] He married Lucy Dana/Donna JACKSON, on 3 Apr 1812 in Blandford, Hampden, MA.[1] Born on 28 Mar 1794.[1] Lucy Dana/Donna died in Housatonic, MA on 14 Jul 1886; she was 92.[1]
Jane's eldest uncle, who lived past childhood, was Samuel. He was the only son who did not come with the family to Ohio in 1815. Two of his children settled in Brunswick/Liverpool, Ohio. Uncle Samuel died when Jane was 14 years old. Lucy was probably the subject of the diary entry of 6 June 1858 - "Wrote a letter to Aunt Lucy." Lucy was perhaps living back in Hampden or Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
Samuel drove the "Opposition Stage" coach between Albany and Boston until the railroad came in about 1830-40. He was very stern and severe, but jolly and strictly honest in business. He was considered a man of his word. Lucy was jolly and a great worker and visitor. They lived in Cole River and "all around." [1]
By 1840 Samuel and Lucy appear to have moved to the Brunswick area from Otis, Massachusetts where Miles had been born in 1835. A Samuel Tillotson was living in Brunswick when the 1840 Census was made. He is listed as 30-40 years old but our Samuel was actually 48. His wife, possibly Lucy, is also listed as 30-40 years old but must have been about the same age he was. Son Miles was about 5 but the only young male is listed as 10-15. There are also four young girls, 1 under age 5, 2 aged 5-10, and one aged 10-15. These girls should be Abigail, Orra, Orpha, and Mary Ann but, if so, their ages are consistently understated by about three years. There are not enough children, especially boys, listed. Did some of them die in childhood or were they living elsewhere? Perhaps the census entry is for a different Samuel Tillotson
They had the following children:
2 i. Samuel Franklin (1814-)
3 ii. Lyman Curtis (1816-)
4 iii. William (1821-)
5 iv. Mary Ann (1822-)
6 v. Leverett Bloomfield (1825-)

9 viii. George Wallace (1830-)
10 ix. Abigail Chaffee (Abbie) (1832-1913)
11 x. Miles Wells (1835-1870)

She married Dudley Phelps STRANAHAN, son of John Sheffield STRANAHAN & H LIVERMORE, on 1 Jan 1847 in Medina County, OH.[3] Born on 6 Jun 1823 in Hebron, Windham County, CT.[2] Dudley Phelps died in OH in 1894; he was 70. Another marriage date could be 18 Jan 1846. Medina County Marriage Records vol B page 100 gives Hubbard Lawrence as the minister.
The IGI gives a Cornelia born in Ohio about 1825 which must be mistaken. Jane's 1858 diary mentions a Dudley, Cornelia, and children came by on May 14. There do not appear to be any other mentions of this couple. Other references to a Dudley appear to be for a Dudley Brown.
Like her brother, Miles, she must have visited her Ohio relatives and met Dudley on one of these visits. After their marriage in 1847 Dudley and Cornelia appear to have lived in Columbia and later in Liverpool. In 1858 they were probably still living in Columbia. They children mentioned would be Helen Augusta who was then about 10 years old and Rollo Perry who was about eight.
Dudley Stranahan was a farmer in Liverpool but he had learned the trade of carpenter and joiner from his father. In addition to his farm he had a lumbering and saw-mill business in Liverpool. He belonged to the Disciples' Church, was a member of the I.O.O.F. (International Order of Odd Fellows), and voted Republican "every time." (1881 Medina History p 753) Cornelia outlived him and owned property in Liverpool adjoining the Lucius Warner farm. She cared for Aunt Milly Warner in her last years.(Tillotosn Gen) His parents lived in Columbia, Ohio from 1831 to 1860. He was a farmer in Liverpool.
Their children are listed in the History of Medina County (1881), page 753 and first three are listed in the 1860 census. They had the following children:
12 i. Helen Augusta (1848-)
13 ii. Rolla/Rollo Perry (1850-)
14 iii. Miles (1859-)
15 iv. John Samuel (1863-1916)
8. Orra Jane TILLOTSON. Born on 8 Sep 1828/1829 in Otis, Berkshire County, MA.[2]
9. George Wallace TILLOTSON. Born on 20 Sep 1830 in Otis, Berkshire County, MA.[2]
10. Abigail Chaffee (Abbie) TILLOTSON. Born on 23 Aug 1832 in Otis, Berkshire County, MA.[2] Abigail Chaffee (Abbie) died in Springfield, MA on 22 Aug 1913; she was 80. May have been born 22 Aug.
11. Miles Wells TILLOTSON. Born on 21 Dec 1835/1836 in Otis, Berkshire County, MA.[2] Miles Wells died in Ovid, Clinton County, MI on 15 Jan 1870; he was 34. Buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid, MI Lot 075. He married Parnell (Nellie) BUTTS, daughter of Daniel BUTTS & Emeline, on 7 Sep 1860 in Medina County, OH.[4] Born on 3 Sep 1840. Parnell (Nellie) died in Oct 1910; she was 70. Buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid, MI Lot 075.
Miles and Nellie lived in Elyria, OH and Ovid, MI. Cemetery records give year of his birth as 1835. In 1870 Nellie was living in Ovid, Clinton County, MI. (US Census)
Miles was well known to Jane and is mentioned several times in her diaries. There were many visits, attending church together, and several times when they attended sings together. He was a little over a year younger than Jane. He is mentioned some 22 times in the 1858 diary but seems to have moved away, at least temporarily, towards the end of the year. I believe Parnell is the Nellie mentioned in so many of the entries with him. It would appear that they were courting as early as 1858. They may not have lived so close to Jane after the marriage as Miles is only mentioned twice in 1861 and Nellie not at all. They apparently moved to Michigan.
Miles was a farmer and Republican. In Ovid, MI he was a manufacturer of blinds, doors and sashes. On 10 January 1870 he was caught and wound over a shaft in his factory. He died five days leater. The 1870 U.S. Census for Ovid, Michigan shows Nellie had three children born in Ohio between 1862 and 1867.
They had the following children:
16 i. Ida Amelia (1861-)
17 ii. Frank F. (1864-)
18 iii. Harry Clayhton (1866-)
