1. Zadock TILLOTSON. Born on 26 Nov 1793 in Lee or Tyringham, Berkshire Co, MA. Zadock died in Brunswick, Medina County, OH age 65 on 28 Apr 1859; he was 65. He first married Susan Caroline ROGERS, on 29 Aug 1815 in Tyringham, Berkshire Co, MA.[1] Born on 12 Jun 1794 in Hudson, NY. Susan Caroline died in Brunswick, Medina Co, OH on 23 Jul 1837; she was 43.[2] Her tombstone in Westview Cemetery, Brunswick, OH gives her name as Caroline S.
Zadock was a blacksmith and a Whig. (Tillotson Gen) His family appears in the 1830 U.S. Census for Brunswick. The family included Zadoc and first wife Susan and four children. These would include Harriet Amelia who was about 10, Lorenzo Warner who was about three, and Erastus Allen who was about 13. Who the boy aged 5-10 was is not known. There was also an older man aged 70-80 who may have been Susan's father or another older relative.
By the 1840 Census the family consisted of Zadock, now in his 40s, and Almira. The children were probably Zadock aged about 6, Lorenzo aged about 13, and Erastus aged about 23. The mystery son, now aged between 15 and 20 years is still there.
The 1850 U.S. Census shows Zadock in his mid-50's and Almira at age 48. Lorenzo was 22 and living at home as a farmer. Two years later on 21 April 1852 he would marry Catherine Burell and by 1860 they must have moved away from the area. Zadock, jr. was 17 and Caroline was 9. Harriet Amelia must have married James A. Heacock by then and moved away. Emily who was about 8 in 1850 does not appear in the census for some reason but she was listed in 1860 so she may have just been inadvertantly omitted. Erastus had married Phidelia Mathers on 23 February 1841 and by 1850 had two children.
By 1858 Zadock was not well and he died in 1859. The changing condition of his illness can be seen in the November and December 1858 diary entries. Almira was a 57 year old widow, was living with her son, Zadock, in 1860. (US Census)
They had the following children:
2 i. Erastus Allen (1817-1887)
3 ii. Harriet Amelia (1820-1856)
4 iii. Edward Rogers (1823-1895)
5 iv. Lorenzo (Ren) Warner (1827-)
6 v. Albert Zadock (Zed) (1833-1912)
He second married Almira/Elmira Benjamin BABCOCK, on 14 Jun 1838.[3] Born on 4 Feb 1802. Almira/Elmira Benjamin died in Crete, IL on 14 Dec 1888; she was 86.
They had one child:
7 i. Caroline Rogers (Carrie) (~1841-)

2. Erastus Allen TILLOTSON. Born on 23 Jan 1817 in Brunswick, Medina County, OH. Erastus Allen died in Lansing, MI on 9 Jul 1887; he was 70. He married Phidelia/Fidelia MATHERS, daughter of Joseph MATHERS & Saloma, on 23 Feb 1841 in Liverpool, Medina County, OH.[4] Born on 31 Dec 1818. Her family came to Brunswick from Wyoming, NY in 1831.
In 1860 Erastus was a 43 year old blacksmith living in Liverpool, Ohio with his wife, two children, and a 13 year old girl named Ida Ammon, probably working as a domestic. The two children were Lewis? who was 14 and Erastus, jr. who was 12. Although this family was living near Brunswick, Jane does not mention them in her diary. Erastus Tillotson located his blacksmith business in Liverpool Village as early as 1839 and was still there after 1860. He was active in the M.E. Church according to the Brunswick M.E. Church records.
They had the following children:
8 i. James Wesley (1843-)
9 ii. Erastus Allen jr. (1845-)
3. Harriet Amelia TILLOTSON. Born on 12 Jan 1820 in Brunswick, Medina County, OH.[1],[5] Harriet Amelia died in Liverpool, Medina County, OH on 1 May 1856; she was 36.[5] She may have died from complications of child birth. A Liverpool cemetery book gives date of death as 4 May 1866. The 1866 is obviously wrong given the second marriage and age at death. The 4 May could be burial date. The family Bible of James A. Hancock gives her date of death as 1 May 1856 and gives her birth date.[5] She married James Austin HANCOCK, son of Lot HANCOCK & Persis, on 4 Oct 1839 in Brunswick, Medina County, OH.[6] According to Medina County Marriage Records vol A, page 209 they were married by Rev. Warner Beebe.
He was a farmer, a Republican, and a Methodist. They lived in Chatham, Medina County, Ohio.
They had the following children:
10 i. Charles Harrison (1840-1862)
11 ii. George Henry (1848-)
12 iii. Austin Tillotson (1856-)
4. Edward Rogers TILLOTSON. Born on 15 Nov 1823 in Brunswick, Medina County, OH.[1] Edward Rogers died in North Alma, Harlan Co, NE in 1895; he was 71. Buried in Alma, Harlan Co, NE. He married Betsey Brown SANDERSON, on 2 Oct 1846. Buried in Alma, Harlan Co, NE.
They had the following children:
13 i. Caroline (1848-)
14 ii. Marcia Ann (1849-)
15 iii. Eri (1850-)
16 iv. Amy Rose (1853-)
17 v. Martha (1856-)
18 vi. Harriet (1858-)
19 vii. Zadock (1860-)
20 viii. Alonzo (1862-)
5. Lorenzo (Ren) Warner TILLOTSON. Born on 25 Aug 1827 in Brunswick, Medina County, OH.[1] He married Catharine Jane BURVILLE, daughter of Reuben BURVILLE & Anne REYNOLDS, on 21 Apr 1852.[3]
They lived in Hinckley, Ohio; Springfield, Dane County, WI; and Crete, Illinois.[7] He was a Republican and a 7th Day Adventist.
They had the following children:
21 i. Myron James (1854-)
22 ii. Lillian Gertrude (1857-)
23 iii. Adelbert Trevelyan (1864-)
6. Albert Zadock (Zed) TILLOTSON. Born on 23 Aug 1833/1834 in Brunswick, Medina County, OH.[1] Albert Zadock (Zed) died on 21 May 1912; he was 78. He first married Emily Maria METCALF, daughter of Warren METCALF & Mary Ann DEMING, on 12 Jun 1860 in Grafton, OH.[8] Born on 9 Feb 1842. Emily Maria died in Oberlin, OH on 8 Nov 1898; she was 56.
Zadock was born the same year as Jane. He appears to be another cousin with whom she was quite friendly. I believe that he is the Zed referred to frequently in her diaries. Everything seems to fit. Zed was single in 1858 and married in 1861. Zadock married Emily M. Metcalf on 12 June 1860 (MCMR). Zed's wife is mentioned in two entries, but not by name. It is interesting that Zed should be mentioned so often but seldom his wife.
Zed was afflicted early in life with Scrofula and sore eyes. Therefore, he was unable to read until he was an adult. This resulted in his being poorly educated. He drove the stage coach between Berea and Brunswick, OH. (Tillotson Gen)
They had one child:
24 i. Albert Zadock (1867-)
He second married Sarah M. (Potter) SILK Mrs., on 11 Jun 1891. Born in 1852. Sarah M. (Potter) died in 1917; she was 65. I found a reference to a Sarah M. Silk Tillotson whom I assume is her.
They had the following children:
25 i. Arthur Lorenzo (1892-1910)
26 ii. "unnamed" (1893-1893)
Family of Zadock TILLOTSON (1) & Almira/Elmira Benjamin BABCOCK
7. Caroline Rogers (Carrie) TILLOTSON. Born abt 1841. Birth year is derived from the 1860 US Census in which she is listed as being 19 years old. She married Amos WOODRUFF, on 22 Jul 1861.[9] According to Medina county Marriage Records vol C, page 329 they were married by Rev. G.H.Breckenridge. Amos may be the Amos Woodruff who married Polly Van Tyne and lived in Hinckley, just east of Brunswick. Carrie may have been his second wife.
Caroline I believe is the Carrie mentioned in the diaries. She is often mentioned in tandem with Zed. The fact that Carrie had a new husband is mentioned in October 1861 and Caroline married Amos Woodruff on 22 July 1861 (MCMR, vol C, p 329 and Jane's diary entry for 22 July). As with the wife of Zed, Carrie's husband remains unnamed in the diary. Caroline was born about 1841 (US Census for 1860) so she was quite a bit younger than Jane. There are several periods of time when Carrie was brought to stay for a week or so with Jane. It seems likely that Carrie and her husband moved from the area. Jane did not attend the wedding and did not see Carrie's husband until several months later. That entry appears to be the last one for Carrie.
