This one's for you, Jen:
"Thou wert my guide, my philosopher,
and my friend."
-- Alexander Pope
So you've decided to be brave and tackle the mess in my attic, huh? Beware the cobwebs, and watch a few of the floorboards -- they can be tricky. But other than that, you should be alright. In here I store a lot of my older writings, so if you'd be so kind as to ignore the dust, have a good time reading!
The Diner
Knowing how I feel
Knowing my love is real
I try to say it.
Nothing comes
Feeling numb
I try to say it.
Words all wrong
No happy song
I had the chance
I blew it.
Years pass
A sideways glance
I try to say it.
Tears fall hard
Dealt a rotten card
I try to say it
Words won't come
Unhappy one
I had the chance
I blew it.

Passerby
I used to think we could be together
Now I think I know better
But I never meant for you to hate me
or hate how I've become in love with you
a love not true
It must be hard for you to see me
What are you scared about?
Is it really that hard to smile when I look your way?
It would not take much to make my day
A "hi," a "how're you doing," a simple conversation started by you
could set me free and let me fly
But to you I'm just another passerby.
And I wish I knew why.

Devil in Tuscon
Don't forget me . . .
Don't ever forget me . . .
I miss you so . . .
I love you . . .
And I need you . . .
I miss you so . . .
But, please . . .
No matter where you are . . .
No matter how big the star . . .
Be sure to wish every night . . .
That everything will be alright . . .
And that you'll remember . . .
Our times together . . .
That you won't forget me . . .
Won't ever forget me . . .
I miss you so . . .

Forever
I'd like to know what forever's for.
You said it was made for our love, but our love isn't here anymore.
What am I supposed to believe in when all this time you've been saying, "believe in me"?
How am I supposed to dream at night when all my dreams are quickly fading?
You told me you would always be there for me--forever you'd care.
There's that question of forever again: why is forever there?
Because if it's not for our love, and not for my dreams,
Could someone please tell me what forever means?

So you've come to view the damage, the bloody courtyards of my love. My castle has been invaded and plundered so many times I'm surprised it still stands. Not many are left, and those who remain are dying. Now you have come to attack my castle of love. Come! Fight your best! But no harm will it do. The kingdom has truly been destroyed and the king lies on his deathbed, fallen from the poisoned arrows. The soldiers all are dead. No longer have I got an army to keep the enemy out. So come and kill; there's too few left to defend you, even if you tried. For as you lift your bow and arrow, my king of love has died.
