III. 3. The Confederacy

The Confederacy had only nine million people within its eleven states and three and a half million of those were slaves. There were only one million white males aged fifteen to forty who were eligable for military service. And the Confederacy started using blacks in their military only during the closing days of the war.

Economically, the South adapted to the needs of the war in both agriculture and manufacturing. Cotton production decreased sharply, whereas food increased. Because the states did not want strong federal government, taxation by the Confederate States of America failed miserably and inflation skyrocketed.
