After Corinth fell to Union forces, Halleck went to WAshington, D.C., to act as military advisor to Lincoln. Before he left, he assigned Grant the inactive job of guarding communications along the Missisippi River. Halleck told Buell to capture Chattanooga. Before Buell could carry out the orders, General Braxton Bragg, the Confederate commander in Tennessee, suddenly invaded Kentucky. He wanted to draw the Northerners out of Tennessee. Buell raced to protect the Northerners in Tennessee. Bragg and Buell met on October 8, 1862, in the Battle of Parryville. the result was indecisive and Bragg retreated to Murfeesboro, Tennessee.
