Major Robert Anderson (1805-1871) made his headquarters at Fort Moultrie, South Carolina. Anderson was notified that South Carolina troops would soon attack Fort Moultrie and it would be difficult to defend his position. He then moved his headquarters to Fort Sumter, South Carolina.
In April 1861, General Pierre G.T. Beauregard, the Confederate general, demanded the surrender of the fort. Anderson refused. On April 12, 1861, under General Beauregard's orders Confederate guns bombarded Fort Sumter and started the Civil War. On April 14, 1861, Anderson surrendered. The Confederates allowed Aderson and his troops to leave with their equipment and their flag.
