II. A. Religion

Religion was the only true freedom the slaves had. They could choose their own church, which was predominantly Methodist. Black churchgoers outnumbered white churchgoers almost seven to one (Clarke 114).

Education of slaves was illegal; therefore organized religious instruction increased as the abolitionist movement grew. Sunday schools taught children to read.
