Sticks made of wood, metal or plastic introduce the child to straight lines. The lengths of the sticks were multiples of the length of the sides of the cubes of the third gift. In this way the proportions of the earlier gifts was continued and the lines could be assembled to match the edges of the earlier gifts or arranged to create an endless variety of patterns.
This is the natural progression of the gifts; to build on the familiar aspects of earlier gifts and introduce the child to new possibilities.
The lines of the eighth gift can be arranged to create stick figures or trees and flowers. Abstract patterns are also possible.
This gift connected with several occupations such as paper weaving and sewing, which depend on the creative use of lines
