My Internet DEBATE With Dan Adams

2. 11/09/97 - Why I Am A Christian

My name is Tom Lee, and I have agreed to an Internet debate with Daniel Adams about the existence or non-existence of God. As a Christian, I, of course, believe in God's existence, and over the next few weeks, I hope to defend my position. Before getting into that defense, however, I wish to make an opening statement and explain why I am a Christian. I have read the Bible through numerous times, I have studied Theology at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, I have taught Sunday School for more than ten years, and I have tried to faithfully serve the Lord for almost thirty years. Yet, none of those Christian activities explain why I am a Christian. I do not now embrace the Lord because I have somehow acquired enough knowledge to have made some kind of intellectual choice. Instead, I am a Christian because of a particular time in my life when I knew that I needed Him more than I needed anything or anyone else.

On my homepage (http://geocities.datacellar.net/~tlee6040), I have posted most of my Christian writings. In chapter 10 of a book which I wrote, entitled "The Story of My Difficult Years," I explain the circumstances which led to the surrendering of my heart and life to the Lord. In November 1967, almost exactly 30 years ago today, I was in very serious personal trouble, and I did not know how to solve my problems. Out of desperation, I called upon the Lord, asked Him to forgive me for all that I had done to mess up my life, and then pledged my life to Him if He would help. When I sought Him, I did not even know if He were out there. I also did not know if He would open His ears to my plea. But He did help, and now, thirty years later, I am doing my best to learn more about Him and to serve Him. In Jeremiah 29:13, the Bible says, "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." My belief is that I met the criterion of that verse on December 14, 1967 and that that is the day when I became a Christian. In the years since, I have never regretted my decision to turn my life over to Him.
