1. List the four questions without looking at your notes. Peter asked where Jesus was going. Thomas asked how they could know the way. Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father. Judas, not Iscariot, asked Jesus how He could manifest Himself to them and not the world.
2. Who asks each question? Peter asked the first question, Thomas the second, Philip the third, and Judas, not Iscariot, the fourth.
3. What does the word "mansion" mean? Mansion comes from a Greek word that means a staying, abiding, dwelling, or abode.
4. What did Christ mean when He said, "I will come again"? He was telling His disciples that His time had come and that He would be going back to His Father in heaven. However, He told them that He would someday return to receive all believers unto Himself. The church calls His return the Rapture. His remark also was His way of saying that He would provide His spiritual presence among us and in us.
5. What is the meaning of "The Way"? John 14:6 says, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Jesus is the Way to the Father. He is the Way to heaven.
6. What is the title used to describe Philip? Why is that title attributed to him? Philip was the analytical one. He was always figuring things out. He was probably the leader of the second quartette of disciples. Because of his analytical nature, he was probably the one in charge of logistical things for the group.
7. What is meant by the phrase "greater works"? Jesus told His disciples, in verse twelve, that those who believe on Him would see and do greater works than He had. He was not referring to greater miracles. He was talking about their being able to do great ministerial works because of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
8. What is the difference between the Holy Spirit being "with you" and "in you"? In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit was with people and empowered them to do great things for the Lord. In the New Testament, His ministry is different. He indwells believers and is in them, helping them to serve the Lord and know more about Him.
9. What is a Paraclete? This is the Greek word used by John to express the idea of the Comforter. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, and in I John 2:1, He is our Advocate. The word literally means to be summoned, called to one's side, or especially called to one's aid. The word also describes one who pleads another's cause before a judge, a pleader, a counsel for defense, a legal assistant, or an advocate.
10. What is the difference between a person's standing and state? Our state is that we are all sinners. Our standing in Christ is that we are seen without sin.
11. What is double transference? Double transference conveys the idea of union and communion, Christ in me and I in Christ.
12. Who was "Judas, not Iscariot"? Judas was also known by the names Thaddaeus, Lembius, and Jude. He usually did not use Judas because of the stigma attached to that name. In later years, he changed his name to Jude and wrote a book called "Apostasy."
13. Interpret the statement, "Arise, let us go hence" (v. 31). Some commentators say that Jesus left the Upper Room while most think that His remark was more motivational. Those that think the latter believe that He stayed around to answer additional questions.
