Bible Truth 30 - Relevancy of the Old Testament {369 words}
BT30
: You are part of a Bible study discussion group in which someone offers a point on an Old Testament passage. Another person responds with: "That is from the Old Testament, and therefore does not apply to us as Christians." As discussion leader that night, how would you handle the situation?Several verses could be used to show that the second person was incorrect. First, II Timothy 2:15 says, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." When the Apostle Paul wrote that verse to Timothy, who was a Christian, he did not suggest that Timothy should restrict himself to only the Old Testament. Second, in Matthew 4:4, Matthew 4:7, and Matthew 4:10, Jesus used the Old Testament to answer the taunts of the devil. He also used the Old Testament frequently when responding to the Pharisees, Sadducees, and scribes. Third, in Psalm 119:11, the psalmist wrote that hiding God's Word in one's heart is the key to avoiding sin. While living by the law does not save anyone, sin is the reason that Jesus was crucified, and Christians should not want to intentionally do wrong. Fourth, in Galatians 3:24, the Apostle Paul wrote that the Mosaic Law was given to point people to Christ, and it can still do that even during the current time.
A final reason that one should use the whole Bible is because of the Edenic, Adamic, Noahic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, Grace, and New Kingdom covenants. When God entered into those covenants with His men, He did not completely do away with the preceding covenants. Instead, He added the conditions and stipulations of the existing covenants to the newly established covenants. His dealings with humanity have been additive rather than exclusive, and He has never undone any of His prior arrangements. In covenant theology, all people are saved by grace apart from the law. Therefore, New Testament salvation does not differ from Old Testament salvation, and the truths of the Old Testament are still relevant to those that have lived in the church Age.
