XXV. Lesson 25 - The Person of the Apostle John
A. John means the Lord is gracious. When he was called, he was the youngest disciple, but he outlived them all and became the elder.
B. The chronology of John's call: (1) December at Jesus' baptism (John 1:35-51), (2) Mark 1:16-21, and (3) Luke 5:1-11. About five months passed between John 2:12 and John 2:13. Jesus was called into the wilderness for His time of temptation, but the six disciples did not go back to John the Baptist. The four went to work for Zebedee. In Mark 1:16-21, about two months later, they are called the second time. about three months later, in Luke 5:1-11, they went from working for Zebedee to being partners, so Zebedee may have died. Zebedee has a house in Jerusalem and Capernaum. Scholars believe that James got the Capernaum house and that John got the Jerusalem house because Mary lived with John in Jerusalem after Jesus died. Their mother was Salome, based on Matthew 20:20-28, Matthew 27:55-56, Mark 15:40, and Mark 16:1. Matthew, Mark, and Luke wrote from a Galilean perspective, while John gave a Jerusalem perspective.
C. The evidence suggests that John became the pastor of the Ephesian church, and that is also where Mary died.
D. John's personality - (1) he had pride and was egotistical (Mark 10:35), (2) he had a temper (the son of thunder - Mark 3:17 and Luke 9:49-56), (3) he had a deep love (I John 4:7 - he learned love by being loved), and (4) he could be trusted (with Jairus daughter, he could be trusted to go into the room; he could be trusted with what he saw at the Mount of Transfiguration, he could be trusted with Jesus' mother).
