								Sunday, November 29, 1998

This Week's Lesson:

In this week's lesson, which came from Nehemiah 6:15-16, 12:27-31, 38, 40-41, and 43-47, we studied about the importance of celebrating the completion of God-given jobs and other spiritual jobs well done. It took Nehemiah and his workers fifty-two days to build the wall. But finally, amid much opposition, it was completed, and their enemies were no longer so boastful or confident. Others, in fact, who had seen that God had had His hand in the work, actually became afraid. Many of the surrounding nations were also frightened. None of those who had openly opposed the work knew if they would be punished for having taken their position against the rebuilding of the walls. In the end, the Lord's work had been completed, and the dedication demonstrated by Nehemiah and the other workers became a good testimony to all that had watched.

In Nehemiah 12:37-43, Nehemiah and the people rejoiced over the finished work. The walls were formally dedicated, and then, they celebrated with singing and rejoicing. During the dedication ceremony, the Levites were brought forth to lead the celebration. There were songs of thanksgiving. There were various instruments, including cymbals, harps, and lyres. And the people, who were very happy, made a loud, joyful noise. For the dedication, many had assembled from all other the area, including Netophathites, Beth Gilgal, Geba, and Azmaveth. The priests and Levites purified themselves. Then, they purified the people, the gates, and the walls. After that, Nehemiah sent two large choirs on top of the wall to sing and give thanks. The two choirs went in opposite directions, and Nehemiah and the people followed behind. The procession ended in the house of God, and everyone, including the women and children, were rejoicing. In our Christian walk, we also should celebrate when we have completed something of significance for the Lord. In Nehemiah 12:44-47, the whole ceremony was concluded with a special offering, which was taken up to care for the spiritual leaders, the priests and Levites. Everyone had done their part, and each person celebrated over all that had been done.

As Christians, we should do our works for the Lord with the same zealousness and determination as the people in Nehemiah's time. They faced opposition just as we do, but they did not take their eyes off the Lord or stop trusting Him. When we are faithful to do what He has called us to do, then those around us will have to take note and give God the glory. Our mission is to reach others for Christ. Therefore, as you go through the coming week, try to be faithful and do your best to follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Then and only then will your life truly make a difference.
