ORDER OF OMEGA
The Order of Omega is a national greek honor society. I was elected into membersip in March of 1994. I became President of the order in 1995. The O of O was a great experience. The purpose of the order is to recognize those in the greek system who have stood out as excelling and representing the greek system in a positive light. Basically, it was the leaders of the greek system getting together to discuss relevent topics as to greek life at UCSD. We held monthly meetings at local restaurants and planned long term goals for the UCSD greek community. Under my Presidency, we initiated the development of the UCSD 2020 Plan, which is to be used as a blueprint of where we thought the UCSD greek system should be in the year 2020.
The purpose of the Order of Omega is as follows: To recognize those fraternity men and women who have attained a high standard of leadership in interfraternity activities, to encourage them to continue along this line, and to inspire others to strive for similar conspicuous attainment; To bring together outstanding fraternity men and women to create an organization which will help to mold the sentiment of the institution on questions of local and intercollegiate fraternity affairs. To bring together members of the faculty, alumni, and student members of the institution's fraternities and sororities on a basis of mutual interest, understanding and helpfulness; To help create an atmosphere where ideas and issues can be discussed openly across Greek lines and to help work out solutions.
One of the best things that Order of Omega does is that it brings together men and women from the different houses and allows them a forum to interact and work towards greater understanding and a common goal. We tried to solve the problems that existed and bring the greeks closer together. UCSD already had a greek system that interacted with eachother quite well, but Order of O just brought us closer together. Some of my best friends in college I met through the Order. And the quality of its membership was outstanding. But most importantly, we all knew when to be serious, and when to kick back and have a good time. I really enjoyed my time in the Order of Omega and hope that those same sentiments and atmosphere persist today as they did when I was a member.
I owe my accpetance into the order of O to Rob Brannen. Rob was a pioneer for our fledgeling fraternity. He paved the way for us to follow. He was the first of our members to become involved with IFC and also elected to the Order of Omega. With Rob's recommendation, I was elected into membership. Rob also served as Vice-President my first year. A year later, I was elected President. And in the two years following that, two other Betas were elected President of the Order of Omega, Boris Vaisman and Randall Hottle.
