Let me introduce myself
My name is Natalia Zabegailo(Ivashchenko). Born in Kiev, Ukraine,1953, I came to the USA in 1990 with my husband Yuri and now live in Germany from 2000.
I studied at Kiev University and worked as a lecturer of French at the Kiev University (Ukraine) and then at Ursinus College (PA, USA).
While preparing my Master of Arts degree at Bryn Mawr college (PA, USA) , I devoted a lot of time to the study of medieval French literature. In particular,
I studied the relationship between the chivalrous romances of Chretien
de Troyes and the Fairy Tale as defined by V.Propp .
Rene Girard's literary theory is another subject that interests me.
The prominent figure in the postmodernism, Girard perceives literature
as the source of knowledge about human society, not its object. His careful
study of the world greatest romances made him conclude, that we are unable
to desire by ourselves: the third part must show us the object of our desire.
We believe we are free in our choices, but it is an illusion, we are always
attracted by the objects of somebody's else desire. I attempted to apply
Girard's phenomena of "triangular desire" to the reading of Evgeny
Onegin by A.Pushkin. It gave me a new, better comprehension of the the controversial main character.
My Russian/Ukrainian origin prompt me to pay my debts to the culture that brought me up. I am looking forward to teach elementary Russian course (if Company will be bought by the Russian Pharma: hope not ???) and to help my students discover the subtleties of the Russian world.
Some of my manuscripts you can read on the next page.
