NEW BEGINNINGS

Chapter 1 - Part C

Walking into his office, John Samarra threw his coat onto his desk. Coming around the desk, he sat down in his chair in a huff. Across from him, Samarra found his old friend, Doctor Harrison Fine, reclining on his couch. Fine looked up from a replica of the U.S.S. Endeavor and greeted his old friend.

Nodding to him, Samarra relaxed a little and said, “Sorry. I forgot I was going to meet you after lunch.”

Smiling, Fine jovially said, “That’s alright, Johnny. I’m sure you’ve got a lot to think about.”

Looking closely at him, he confusedly asked, “What?”

Seeing Samarra had no idea of what he was talking about, his smile dropped away. “Uh…you know, war with the I.S.C., all the testing and research Starfleet is yelling for and all the shifting of resources.”

Not totally convinced, Samarra still conceded. “Very well.”

Trying to indirectly pry, Fine asked, “Didn’t you have plans with Katherine for lunch?”

He pursed his lips for a moment before responding, saying, “Yeah. I got there a bit late and she seemed a little tired and stressed out, so we decided to delay everything until tonight. You know, a some dinner, talk, and relaxation. Of course, it seems theirs more on her mind then the upcoming fight. I just wish I had a clue, any clue.”

Popping up, Fine walked over to the desk saying, “It’s not like she’s trying to hide some dark and secret life from you.”

Leaning forward on his desk, he sternly said, “No?" Picking up her framed picture from his desk, he continued, "How would I know? I never know what’s really happening. I don’t know what she’s planning and thinking about. I thought this would be getting better by now.”

“She’s got her own way, irritating, but loveable. If you really didn’t like it, you wouldn’t be here, right?”

Gazing at her image, he agreed. "I love her. Nothing will change that."

“Good. I’d hate to think you wasted all these years.”

Smiling slightly, Samarra said, “That reminds me, Katie’s going to stop by later to get checked, see if theirs really anything wrong.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll take care of her and make sure she’s okay. Plus, I’ll have a talk with her if you like.”

“Harry, don’t you dare, I’ve had to go through enough of your wife’s interference to last me a lifetime.”

“Like you haven’t needed Meg’s 'meddling.' Remember Lanora? Still, I’ll be sure she’s okay.”

Shaking his head, Samarra tried to relax in his chair. “I’m not too worried really. Katie tends to be able to handle anything that comes her way.”

“You don’t sound completely confident in that truth, Commander.”

Samarra sat back, stroking his beard, not responding.
