NEW BEGINNINGS
Chapter 2 - Part D
John Samarra felt himself being softly jostled awake. Slowly opening his eyes, he reflexively called, “Katherine?”
Looking at Moore, he saw she was still unconscious. Tightening his grip on her hand, he took a breath and finished waking up.
A familiar feminine voice behind him softly said, “Sorry, I just figured I’d check on you.”
Turning slowly, he looked up at Kara Dunnedy, standing over him with a concerned look. “Kara? What are you doing here?”
“We’ve brought the Endeavor in for reassignment. We heard what happened and tried to get here as soon as we could.”
Looking up at the room’s window, Samarra saw Megan Takamira and her husband, Harrison Fine, holding each other and watching.
Trying to be offhand, he said, “Not the best timing, but it’s nice to see you.”
“True, but I’m here now, why don’t we get up.”
Looking back to Katherine Moore, he said, “I’m alright.”
Shaking her head, she said, “No, I’ve been here an hour, but Doctor Fine says you’ve been in here for twenty-six hours. You ought to stand for a bit and stretch.”
Looking a little surprised, he said, “That long?”
She just solemnly nodded in response.
He looked down for a moment before saying, “Alright. Just give me a moment.”
As Dunnedy stepped out, Samarra stood, feeling his legs creak. Hovering over Moore, he softly kissed her forehead and looked at her for a long moment. Slowly releasing her hand and stepping away, he finally left the room.
Stepping out into the corridor, Samarra found his friends waiting and watching.
“It looks like a reunion out here.”
Everyone lightly smiled at Samarra’s forced humor.
Looking at Fine, he asked, “Do you know anything else yet?”
Pausing first, Fine said, “Not much, but we’re fleshing out some ideas.”
Crossing his arms, Samarra turned towards the window and looked at his fiancé. “Wonderful.”
Walking over to him, Megan Takamira said, “John, you just need to be…”
Cutting in, he grimly said, “Patient? Yes, Harry’s given me the time speech. I understand.”
An awkward silence filled the hall.
Then, hall’s intercom came to life. “Doctor Fine, incoming priority message.”
Fine began to step away saying, “Excuse me.” Talking to Samarra he said, “It might be good news.”
Samarra didn’t react.
Stepping into a side office, Fine left the trio alone.
Giving each other a sideways glance, Dunnedy and Takamira reached the same conclusion. Jointly, they grabbed an arm each and dragged him from the window to a couch.
Sitting, Samarra, in a less then amused tone, said, “I assume you’d like my undivided attention.”
Megan Takamira took the lead, “Johnny, staring at Kate and impersonating a statue isn’t what she needs, it’s not helping anyone.”
Samarra just sat stoically.
Kara Dunnedy entered in now, “She’s right. Katherine’s safe and everything is being done for her. Besides, you and her friends are here for her, so I think you can start breathing again. You need to get your mind off this for a little bit. Come on, this isn’t what she’d want for you.” Trying to joke, she said, “Now you don’t want to piss her off.”
Slowly looking up, he sighed. Waiting a moment, he said, “You may have a point.” Standing, the two women joined him, as he said, “I probably could use some fresh air. I think I’ll go for a walk…and breathe.”
Takamira put her arms around him in a friendly hug, saying, “Do you want some company?”
Responding to her, he said, “No, I’ll just be stretching my legs and clearing my head.”
Takamira released him and stepped back saying, “We’ll be here.”
“Thanks.” Looking at the two women for a moment he said, “I really mean it.”
Starting to head down the hall, he found himself nearly colliding with a man turning the corner. Much to his surprise he found that it was Andrew Stewart.
Surprised, Samarra said, “Doc?”
Surprised, in response Stewart said, “John?”
“Now you’re here to?”
“It’s a long story. I got down here as quickly as I could, where’s Doctor Fine?”
“Why?”
“He hasn’t told you yet? We really don’t have time discuss it all now, but I think I know happen to Moore.”
