BIOLOGY  S.A.

Welcome to the web site for Olmsted Falls High School's Biology S.A. class.   The purpose of this site is to provide the prospective student or parent with a general overview of the course and to give the current student alternative sources of learning that can be used throughout the year.

Olmsted Falls High School schedules 3 different biology classes:  Biology, Biology S.A., and Advanced  Biology.   Although both Biology and Biology S.A. classes are introductory classes, Biology S.A. is designed to be more challenging to the beginning biology student.    Advanced Biology is designed for the junior or senior who has met prerequisite science requirements.

The course is taught by James Emigh.   He is a graduate of Allegheny College where he received a BS in Biology and an MA in Education.   He has been teaching at Olmsted Falls for 28 years.

The course uses Modern Biology, a textbook published by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston.   The course schedule follows the Table of Contents that is presented in the text,  with the exception of a unit on ecology which is presented during the spring term.    Major topics include: the Scientific  Method, cytology, respiration and photosynthesis, diffusion and osmosis, protein synthesis, basic inorganic chemistry, genetics, evolution, taxonomy and as mentioned , ecology.   Students are expected to keep a notebook which includes daily notes, assignments, lab work, and summaries of miscellaneous activities.   Homework is given daily.

Grades are determined by a student's performance over 4 major areas.   These areas include
tests and quizzes, homework, lab work, and the notebook project.   A small amount of extra credit is available.   An exam is given at the conclusion of each of the 9 week grading periods.
