MT=Mindtraveler
What does it mean? I would that you would ask my great grandmother, however, as she is no longer alive -- I will
explain as best as I can.
My great grandmother was a full-blood Black-Foot Indian who was
named Tanager. She and my grandmother (who explained most
of what my great grandmother told me, as I grew older and
wanted to know more) told me when I was quite young,
around four or five years old, I believe, that I would always
"travel in the mind", or, in her "legends of old" I would
become, as I aged, a "mindtraveler". It is the only name
that she ever called me.
Great granny also told me that as I grew older that my
spirit companions would become more clear to me.
That I was scared to death of screech owls did not help me
much when she explained "all" of them to me on one of
those calm, peaceful afternoons, as the winds whispered
and soughed through the pines at my grandmother's
old home.
My companions were to be the great horned owl --
who would "fly ahead" and alert me of danger.
The "puma" or cougar, would be my constant
companion always -- to fight when I could
not protect myself. The oak tree would be the
symbol of strength, which I would need later
in life. This, at my young age, I refused to
believe, as I preferred the pine trees, where the
locusts would "shed" their skins and we would
find them by the dozens the next day. Besides,
nothing was more fun then, than to "pelt" my
bully big brother with pine cones!!
Much later in life, she would tell me,
a great white wolf would travel with
me. This, of course, afforded me a great
many nightmares when I was young,
as I would "travel" even then in my dreams,
and would awaken and not understand where
I had been or what I had been doing there.
However, all the above being true -- I do travel a
great deal -- in the past, present, and future,
in my mind. Sometimes I travel when I am
awake, and sometimes I travel when I am
asleep. Sometimes in my travels, much to
my horror when I was a teenager and only wanted
to "attract" the cutest boys, I would dream, to my
astonishment, that in past lives, I was a man.
I've been a wealthy merchant in Venice in the
7th century; a lady's maid to Elizabeth I; an actor in
Shakespeare's "troupe", (also as a man, of course),
a lowly "serf" in King Arthur's day; a warrior woman in Queen Boadicea's service; and even a woman in the camp of Ghengis Khan.
So, yes, I "travel"..... in my "mind".
Great grandmother was a wise woman.
My great grandfather, Manylakes, was not my
great grandmother's equal in birth, being of
"mixed" tribal blood. He named me, at the
time of my birth, with the middle name of
Lynn -- which to my surprise, in the language
of fae, means, "lake". Great grandpa knew
more than he let on, I believe.
So, thus is the explanation for my name,
why I love animals, especially wolves, and
why I love nature, especially trees.
I am no longer frightened of owls, or
big cats, or even wolves. I have "accepted"
my fate, so to speak and would even learn
more of it, if I were able.
Having bored you enough -- thus the
explanation of "MindTraveler", who she
is, why she was named thus, and why she
"travels" as she does.
My ancestors have given me a great
legacy of myth and legend, which I
believe to be true -- which in my
mind, makes me the more "wealthy"
for the believing and living of it.
May we all be so "wealthy" in our
lifetimes.
Again, good "journey" to you. Peace,
blue skies, and travel far.
Godspeed -- MindTraveler.
