Dear North Texas Phi Beta Kappas,
As the incoming president of the North Texas Association of Phi Beta Kappa, I would like to welcome you to our new season for 2004-2005! If you are new to the area, or recently inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, let me extend to you a special invitation to join the North Texas Association. We are dedicated to promoting lifelong learning and friendship among all members of Phi Beta Kappa residing in North Texas. And if you are a past member, thank you for your support, and welcome back! We have another exciting year of excellent programs. Be sure not to delay payment of your local dues for 2004-05. We wouldn’t want you to miss any events. |

The Steering Committee has put together a Fall banquet with one of the most unusual topics I can remember in recent years. Historian Bryan Rigg will discuss his award winning book, Hitler's Jewish Soldier: The Untold Story of Nazi Racial Laws and Men of Jewish Descent in the German Military. Dr. Rigg’s ground breaking research reveals that a startlingly large number of German military men, perhaps 150,000, were classified by the Nazis as Jews or “partial-Jews” (Mischlinge). These soldiers, generals and admirals among them, led lives of emotional complexity and moral ambiguity as they were forced to face the true nature of the Nazi regime. This promises to be a fascinating talk!
The banquet will take place on Saturday, October 2, in the Oak Lawn Room at City Place Conference Center, Central Expressway & Haskell. A reception with cash bar will begin at 6:30 p.m., with dinner served at 7:00, and the program beginning at 7:45. The cost is $25. Please return the enclosed reservation form by September 28. To reach the location, turn east on Haskell off Central Expressway, then right on Weldon. Go down Ramp #5 to the free parking in Garage C. Take the parking elevator to Level C (Concourse). Enter the lobby through the revolving doors, then take the elevator in the lobby to the G Floor.
Our all volunteer Association is dependent solely on local dues for such costs as this mailing, fees to the National Society, the voice mail, and other services. Your payment of dues also allows us to provide our banquets at cost, thus maximizing participation. For those who are able, I ask you to consider joining above the basic membership level of $25. Members joining at the bibliophile level or greater will receive special recognition at future events. We also request your support of our scholarship fund to continue this valuable activity.
Your active involvement is important to us. If you have a suggestion for an event, let me know! If you would like to join the steering committee, come aboard! If you have particularly enjoyed a past event, let us know you want another. I hope to meet as many of you as possible throughout the coming year. Please join us. Very truly yours, Bruce K.
