King Anthony considered what he man had just said and thought he was right.

I guess I am the best at climbing trees and shooting arrows but I’m not the best at being King. But I don’t know what to do, I’ve always been the best at everything. How can I learn to be a good King?

King Anthony’s mother, the Queen, walked up to him and whispered in his ear. We don’t know what she said but it must have been awful for King Anthony’s face scrunched up and he stuck his tongue out in distaste. Then King Anthony made an announcement to his people:

"Be here tomorrow at supper and I shall prove to you that I will be a good King forever more."

The next day all the people in the Kingdom gathered in the dining-hall to see King Anthony. He sat down at the table and a person served him a large covered plate. King Anthony lifted the top off and looked down at the biggest most awful pie he had ever seen in his whole life! It smelled very bad and King Anthony had to hold his nose while he ate it. Let me tell you it felt really bad going down. How do I know this? Well, if you saw how awful King Anthony’s face looked as he ate the pie, you could tell for yourself.

Years later King Anthony still ruled the land, except this time the people were happy. King Anthony set taxes and reduced taxes. He listened to disputes and settled them. He had grown into a wise and good King like his father had been. He still was the best at sword-fighting and tree-climbing but he didn’t brag about it and didn’t spend all his time playing. All in all I think you would agree that this is a very happy ending.

What! Wait a minute! What do you mean what caused the change in King Anthony? You weren’t paying attention. You haven’t guessed? Well the pie that King Anthony ate was a pie nobody ever wants to eat. You certainly can avoid having to eat it. What’s the name? Well it is the pie that King Anthony’s father had warned him about many, many years ago. Do you remember? Then I’ll tell you -- it’s humble pie. How can you avoid having to eat it? Just remember all the bad choices King Anthony chose and don’t imitate him. Remember all the good choices King Anthony made and copy them. I guarantee you that you will never have to eat humble pie if you do this.
