Meeting
Role: Timer
Contributed by Brad Weyers
Purpose:
The timer is responsible for keeping track of all timed segments.
The timer helps all speakers (prepared speakers, table
topic speakers, and evaluators) speak within their allotted time.
This helps keep the meeting on schedule.
Before the meeting:
- Test the timing equipment.
- Check with the featured speakers to see if they have unusual timing requirements.
- Sit where the speakers can easily see the timing lights or flags.
During the meeting:
- When called upon, explain the timing rules and demonstrate the timing device.
- Operate
the timing equipment, e.g. stopwatch and lights or flags. All
speeches have stated time limits but speakers still qualify if they
speak at most 30 seconds too short or too long. The green light or flag
should be shown at the stated minimum speaking time, the yellow light
or flag halfway between minimum and maximum time, and the red light or
flag should be shown at the stated maximum speaking time.
- Record the name and time for each speaker.
- When
called upon, report the time taken by each speaker and indicate whether
the speaker is qualified (whether he or she spoke within the allotted
time or within the grace period).
Recommendations:
- Typical speech times are:
