notes by Loal Davis

1. e4 c5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. f4 g6 4. Nf3 Bg7 5. Be2 d6 6. d3 e5 {The "Botvinik" system.} 7. O-O Nge7 8. Qe1 O-O 9. Qh4 f6 10. Be3 {White offered a draw.} 10... Nd4 11. Bd1 Be6 12. Rf2 Qd7 {Connecting Rooks and supporting 'b5' - but important (tactically) is that the Bishop on 'e6' is defended.} 13. Ne2 13... Nef5 {This wasn't playable on the previous move because after capturing the Knight, Qh3 pins against e6.} 14. exf5 Nxf5 15. Nxe5 fxe5 ({My original intention was} 15... dxe5 {but I saw possibilities of opening the long diagonal against 'b7' and usage of the 'f' file.}) 16. Qh3 Nxe3 17. Qxe3 exf4 18. Rxf4 (18. Nxf4 Bd4 19. Qxe6+ Qxe6 20. Nxe6 Bxf2+) 18...Rxf4 19. Qxf4 (19. Nxf4 Bd4) 19... Rf8 20. Qd2 (20. Qc1 {to defend to Pawn allows} 20... Qf7 {and mate is not far off.} 21. Ng3 (21. h3 Be5) 21... Qf2+ 22. Kh1 Qf1+) 20... Qf7 {Mate is again threatened and the 'b' and 'a' Pawns are about to fall.} 0-1
