DYNAMIC-SCIENTIFIC PHILOSOPHY

ON EMOTIONS

The Role Of The Hypothalamus

(Originally posted in 1998 at Culture Forum, SabraNet)

I studied this afternoon my 'Neuroscience 1977,' as far as emotions and the hypothalamus is concerned. During four hours I read three pages and made a lot of associations. I'll be concise:

The hypothalamus and the neighboring areas are coordinating centers for many vital functions and for the MANIFESTATIONS of the EMOTIONS. The only emotional manifestation remaining in experimentally decerebrated cats is the SURVIVAL posture of preparing for attack (arching a pilo-erected body, gnawing teeth...).

EMOTIONS are FELT in cortical areas, as the end result of complex intermediate steps. Corresponding signals reach the hypothalamus, from where the autonomic (sympathic-parasympathic) nervous system fibers in turn send the signals for the involuntary manifestations, such as blanching, sweating, fast pulse. Concomitantly, the somatic muscles respond, mostly evidenced by the distortions of the visage expressing rage, fear, sadness, happiness.
It has been shown that by assuming a facial expression for a given emotion, the autonomic manifestations will be manifested: a two-way system!

Thus, the CORPOREAL manifestations of EMOTION are originated in the hypothalamus.

Then I read that it is NOT possible to separate EMOTIONS from their CORPOREAL manifestations. And at this moment, everything clicked together!
You see, I tripped several days ago, and fell from a combined height of nearly four meters (includes my own height). As I was arching forward and downward, my body pivoting on my feet, I looked at the rather soft ground, calculating my chances of survival, and the expected consequences. I lost consciousness momentarily, and could not remember the fall and the subsequent short roll-down.

So now I could realize that emotions CAN be involuntarily suppressed, for I had not felt FEAR! From here, it was just a step to realize that emotions may also be felt "disembodied," i.e., unattached to CORPOREAL manifestations!

And, what does this mean? That I found the explanation for MYSTICAL, "pure," 'divine," "God-like" experiences! I bet you can visualize such disembodied emotion.
Somewhere else I posted on how it is possible to easily test my hypothesis.

As for another autonomically determined somatic manifestation of emotion:

The laboratory bloodletting emotional impact of fear is probably universal. But entirely individual is the autonomic impact, to the point of causing a sudden relaxation of blood vessels' tone, leading to significant hypotension.
Prevention: lie down BEFORE the prick.

By the way, I've seen two young women fainting when just being at my arms' reach, so that I could hold one of them on my arms, and the other I could soften her fall.
The latter one was most amazing, for her eyeballs revealed that she was in a hypnotical state! Both regained consciousness by gentle slaps to their cheeks.

Confusion should not be caused by a different condition: HYPERVENTILATION. Many years ago, a young and wealthy woman visited all the renowned neurology clinics in the world, because she was afraid of dying: she felt that she was becoming disembodied, tingling, fainting. I just couldn't understand how such an easy dx was missed...
