Famous enough were also the water pumps of Archimedes that used a big turning screw in a pipe to pull the water as high as he wanted. The same method was used, as far as I know, in mines until recently. But Archimedes was also making war machines for the defence of his city. He managed to make such devices that could sink the ships of the approaching enemies. He used special made of elevators to lift the enemy ships and let them fall again crashing into the water. When the ships were not close enough he was using a number of reflectors to burn them with concentrated sun energy! He also used a lot of variations of catapults to throw stones, burning material etc. against the enemy.
Another impressive invention is a canon that was working with steam power!
But he made more peaceful uses of steam; i.e. in a machine to lift weights.
Also to not loose track of time he made some excellent clocks working with water flow!
All these from 287 to 212 B.C.
But for really good and detailed information take a look at an Archimedes dedicated site.
