The disk of Phaestos

Phaistos' disk (size A)

As computer users, it would be interesting to see the first hard disc!

It was found in Phaestos on the Greek island of Crete, at the beginning of 2Oth century. It is made of ceramic material, has a 16 cm diameter and is double sided. The text on it was printed using removable letters and written in spiral shape moving from outside towards the centre. 45 different symbols have been used on it, totally 242 symbols, divided by vertical lines in words. The written language is the Grammical B (the first known Greek written language). It is believed to be from 1600 B.C.

Some people that study the disk by observing the symbols on it, believe that it describes the achievements of Hercules but it also symbolizes the evolution of human nature. Some researchers believe that some symbols indicate relations with the star Sirius (Dog Star).

Although this disc was of low density and is 'Read Only', it is still working fine until today! :-)
