Welcome to my little plot in the digital realm. This page falls under the term "hobby." You won't find flashy graphics or fancy coding. Truth is, I work full time and am a single parent so I don't have a huge amount of time available to update this. It is very much a work in progress all of the time.

From this page you can find out about my interests and hobbies, check out some of my favorite places on the 'net, and see what my son, Andrew, is up to. There is a page of my rants, which come about when I need to blow off a little steam. Because this is an election year, this site will be busy until at least November. It also contains links to some of my favorite political sites. For those who speak español, I created a page for your enjoyment.

Please be warned that most of these pages are undergoing extensive renovation.

MY INTERESTS

tablet I like to read just about anything: science fiction, mysteries, biographies, theological works, etc. I like reading stuff in Spanish, too, just to keep in practice. One of my favorite sites on the 'net is Project Gutenberg, which aims to digitize books in the public domain. They can then be downloaded and read on screen to save paper. I also invested in a Sony Clie TJ25 so that I can read books on the run. It has been a handy way to get rid of the guilt of not reading all those books I was supposed to read in college but didn't. Right now I have Kafka's Metamorphosis, Tacitus' De Germannia, and, of course, Sun Tzu's The Art of War downloaded into it, and I still have lots of memory left. The device is so compact that I can take it anywhere and read whenever I have a few minutes of time. It's nice to be able to enjoy some of the classics on my reading list while standing in line, waiting at the doctor's office, etc. A few minutes here and a few there, and pretty soon the whole book has been read! I've also added a doc editing program, so I can write the great American novel just about anywhere. I also have Isilo, a very nice program that allows you to download webpages and their hyperlinks into a PDA. I have found it indispensable.

forbidden About a year and a half ago I started getting ill whenever I ate. It then progressed into constant pain even when I didn't eat. Six months of frustration and excrutiating pain later, I was finally diagnosed with gastroparesis, a rare and debilitating condition in which the stomach does not digest food properly. It leads to pain, bloating, reflux, and occasionally vomiting as well. It is most commonly found in diabetics, although sometimes it is "ideopathic," which means "of unknown origin." It leads to weight loss and in many cases, malnutrition and anorexia. There is no cure. Fortunately, there is a resource on the Internet with information about symptoms, treatments, diets, medications, and physicians located at G-Pact. I can tell you from personal experience that living with it is no fun.

Rocky Even though I live in the middle of the Husker nation, I am still a Jayhawk at heart. At least during basketball season. The Rock Chalk Zone gives you schedules, rosters, scores, and an extensive history of the University of Kansas Men's Basketball program, which in many parts of Kansas is considered a religion. You can even download the Rock Chalk Jayhawk chant.

geek If I wasn't at least somewhat interested in this, you wouldn't be reading this page. Keeping up on the latest specifications can be next to impossible unless you are a full-time web author, but fortunately there are some web sites that can help. For beginners, Joe Barta has a terrific site with a nice little program you can download that will give you a good start on creating your own web site. He also offers lessons on frames, tables, forms, and some basic Javascripting.

Sun Tzu himself Sun Tzu's The Art of War is one of the great classics. Although primarily a military work, its principles are applicable in a variety of situations, both business and personal. There are many different translations, but this one is my favorite.
