This is not meant to be an apology or a disclaimer, but I sincerely believe that at one time, this group played an important role in our society. Where their emphasis was in achieving "justice" where the courts were helpless; in that role they were even a blessing, especially to the many who were (and continue to be) scammed by what I would call "street rats." I am convinced that no civilized person can beat a street rat in his game, unless he is street savy himself. That is where the Mafia did their best work, and that is when they had my fullest respect. Today I can't be sure; different leadership, different social climate, and still, the need continues.
