Washing windows, start to finish, doesn't have to be an impossible job. No job is as long as you have the proper equipment, some basic skills, and useful information. And who else is there to give you this information? I hope the following helps:
- Don't wash windows on a bright, sunny day because the dirty water dries on the windows before you can wipe it off. A mild, dry day is optimum.
- If you've been a consistent cleaner and your windows aren't covered by a thick layer of grime, you can use the simplest cleaning agent ever -- water. That's just fine for rinsing off a thin coat of dirt.
- Use soap sparingly if the dirt is a little thick on those panes. Too much detergent causes streaks and leaves a film that's difficult to rinse off. Commercial window cleaners are cheap and easy to use.
- To give windows extra shine, use this old-fashioned mixture: 1/4 cup cornstarch in 1/2 gallon warm water. It gets rid of dirt quickly and makes windows sparkle.
- Don't let the solution drip off the windows: Dunk your sponge into the cleaning solution and wring it out so that it isn't dripping wet. Move the sponge over the window and cover it with the solution.
- After the window is wet, start at the top corner and pull the squeegee across from side to side. Use overlapping strokes to clean off the rest of the window.
- Between each swipe of the squeegee, wipe the dirty water off the blade with a damp wiping cloth so that it glides easily across the glass.
- Still see some streaks or feel that your windows look dull? After the windows are dry, rub the glass with an ordinary blackboard eraser to eliminate marks and make the glass shine.
