"Locke in America: The Moral Philosophy of the Founding Era"
University Press of Kansas, 1995
By Jerome Huyler
ISBN: 0-7006-0642-4
Huyler brings his new and persuasive interpretation of Locke onto the battleground of American history, and puts Locke's liberalism (when rightly understood), atop the high moral and ideological ground of the founding of the American republic. As I understand it, Dr. Huyler is saying that we can safely consider Locke as one of the Father's of our country, if you consider that an idea (like seeds planted in the right place at the right season) will sprout whatever fruits are generic in that idea.He builds on the work of noted historians to argue that the American revolutionaries, the Federalists, the Anti-federalists, and the Jeffersonian republicans were all committed to a set of moral and political beliefs which were readily available and clearly articulated in Locke's writings.
Jerome Huyler seeks to place the pro-reason, pro-individualism, pro-capitalism philosophy of John Locke back at center stage in the American Revolutionary mind. He argues for Locke's enormous influence on eighteenth-century America's culture and politics. He argues persuasively that Locke greatly influenced the founders of our country. His book is highly recommended for students in history, philosophy, and political science.

A closer reading of Locke's life and thought reveals that he was both, and that the a historical liberal-republican debate has obscured rather than illuminated the nature of Locke's radicalism and influence"...
