In a multimedia project, buttons are objects that do something when clicked. Users can, however, click another object, such as a block of text, a picture, or a graphical element and produce an action. But buttons were invented with the single role of being pushed or prodded with a mouse, cursor, key, or finger.

Buttons

Buttons provide the navigational cues in multimedia programs. They can be two or three dimensional, and can be activated by a keyboard, mouse, or touch screen. Buttons are used for orientation purposes, such as providing an informational map of the kind and range of information, like a menu or table of contents. They also provide cues to get the user from one point to another, go, next, back, up, down, top, or bottom.
