Decreased Cost One of the appealing aspects that multimedia training offers industry is its cost effectiveness over the long run. While the initial startup costs are high, once the necessary equipment is purchased and training programs are produced and implemented, the cost is less than having to supply personnel to provide the training. United Airlines invested $150,000 to develop specialized courseware that would teach employees about equipment in a new airplane. The training program was delivered on CD-ROM, allowing flight attendents to use it on workstations installed at airports around the world. United reported that when management implemented the interactive training program, the company reduced training time from 8 to 3 hours and saved the airline approximately $9 million in travel, hotel, and various other expenses (Fryer 57). |
