Pterry does Eygpt Djelibeybi. Prince Pteppic of the Old Kingdom, the Kingdom of the Sun, goes off to Assassin's school to get an education. When his father dies he learns what it is like to be a living God in a land where time does not pass. Wonderful parody of "Tom Brown's School Days", Greek Philosophers, the riddle of the Sphinx, religion in general.
- 1992 Small Gods Buy it from Amazon.com
The Catholic Omnian Church meets the Golden age of Greece Ephebe. This book is pretty much entirely about the nature of Gods and religion, with a bit about philosophers and philosophy thrown in. Pterry can be very critical of organized religion but this book is a vindication for those of us who can see the good in it too.
-
- 1987 Equal Rites Buy it from Amazon.com
The first appearance of Granny Weatherwax. Eskarina Smith is the first female wizard and probably the last. Granny tries to teach her to be a Witch without success. So they are off to the Unseen University to get her trained as a Wizard. Where they meet Simon, a young man who has just discovered a new kind of Magic. Esk has to save the world from being destroyed by creatures from the dungeon dimension (again). Pterry gets to discuss Magic, Sexism and Quantum physics. Unfortunately we never hear from Esk or Simon again.
- 1988 Wyrd Sisters Buy it from Amazon.com
Pterry does Macbeth from the Witches point of view. Granny Weatherwax is your classic old spinster who lives alone in the woods. Nanny Ogg is everybody's grand mother (literally), the Matriarch of a huge clan. Magrat is a typical new age, naive, well intentioned ninny. This is the book that got me hooked on Terry Pratchett.
- 1991 Witches Abroad
Magrat inherits a Fairy Godmother's Magic Wand, and the three Witches have to go to
New Orleans Genua to keep Emberella from marrying the Frog Prince. On the way they cross Tolken's dwarf and Golem infested mountains, Little Red Riding
Hood, Dracula, The Running of the Bulls, The Yellow Brick Road, and voodoo Zombies in the swamp, for a final showdown to decide who is the real Good Fairy.
- 1992 Lords and Ladies Buy it from Amazon.com
Pterry does "A Midsummer's Night Dream". Everyone, including the Wizards from the Unseen University, is coming to Lancre for the wedding of Magrat and Verence. But how are they going to get married if they can't even carry on a conversation? While the Witches were away the young girls of the village have started their own coven. Now crop circles are blooming everywhere and the "Fair Folk" are returning. If somebody doesn't do something this could be the end of the world (again).
- 1995 Maskerade Buy it from Amazon.com
Pterry does Phantom of the Opera. Granny is moping about without a third Witch to boss around. Nanny Ogg has written a best seller "The Joye of Snacks" that has more in common with the "Joy of Sex" than the "Joy of Cooking". So Nanny and Granny are
off to Anhk-Morpork to get Nanny's royalties, with no intention at all of retrieving Agnes Nitt who has run away to join the opera. ;-) But you know they can't stay out of trouble for long.
- 1998 Carpe Jugulum Buy from Carpe Jugulum Amazon.co.uk in hardcover in paperback
Vampires of course. Queen Magrat has a baby daughter. Agnes (Perdita X) has moved into Magrat's old cottage. The Pictsies have been driven out of Uberwald. (Pictsies are a cultural varient of Gnome.) Granny Weatherwax does another fancy bit of Borrowing. An Omnian Priest is in town for the royal naming ceremony, Mightily-Praiseworthy-Are-Ye-Who-Exalteth-Om Oats. Death shows up a couple of times. But no Librarian!?!?!?
-
- 1983 The Colour of Magic
The first Discworld novel. Introduces Rincewind, TwoFlower and the Luggage. It is a satire of most of the sword and sorcery classics. It's got everything: wizards, magic, tourists, thieves, barbarian heroes, dark Elder Gods, dryads, and dragons. Includes parodies of Fafd and the Gray Mouser, Conan the Barbarian, Pern, The Game of the Gods. Unevenly written, not his best work he hadn't come into his own style yet.
- 1986 The Light Fantastic
Buy it from Amazon.com
Sequel to TCOM. Pterry finds his style. We meet Cohen the Barbarian. One of five of the disc world books (so far)where the world is coming to an end. All eight of the Creators spells have to be said together on Hogwatchnight or the disc will be destroyed. To quote Death : "THE WORD DESTROYED SEEMS QUITE SELF-EXPLANATORY TO ME".
- 1988 Sourcery
In Equal Rites we learned that an eighth son will be a wizard. Now we find out why wizards aren't allowed to have sex. An eighth son of an eighth son will be a sourcerer. The world is (again) in danger of destruction.
- 1990
Foust Eric Buy it from Amazon.com
A young boy tries to summon a demon to get three wishes and gets Rincewind instead. Ruler of the World? The most beautiful woman in the world? Live forever? Be careful what you wish for. Journey to the ends of time and the depths of Hell and learn why
missionaries should be shot on sight.
- 1990 Moving Pictures
Pterry does not let working with a standard medieval fantasy backdrop stop him from doing whatever he wants. The Alchemists have discovered moving pictures and creatures from the dungeon dimension have found a door through Holy Wood. The world is in danger of being destroyed (again). A delightful spoof of movies and the entertainment industry in general. The first appearance of Gaspode the Wonder Dog and the staff of the Unseen University settles into the characters we come to know and love.
- 1994 Interesting Times Buy it from Amazon.com
The Gods are playing games with the fates of men, again. Fate and The Lady are playing "Mighty Empires" with The Fall of Great Houses and Destinies of Nations Hanging by a Thread. Pterry goes to China the Agatean Empire. The emperor is dying and the five families (the Hongs, the Sungs, the Tangs, the
McSweeneys and the Fangs) are gathered to decide the succession. But the Silver Horde is invading as well. Will the Red Army rise to the defense of the people? They need all the help they can get with slogans like "Steady Progress And Limited Disobedience While Retaining Well-Formulated Good Manners."
- 1998 The Last Continent
Pterry goes to
Australia XXXX. Well actually Rincewind does. A local God needs Rincewind to help finish a spell. The Wizards at the University need Rincewind to cure the Librarian. And Pterry gets to discuss Gods, evolution, computers, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
For those of us unfamiliar with the culture of Australia HELP! with "The Last Continent"

- 1987 Mort Buy it from Amazon.com
The first book with Death as a main character. Death wants to go on vacation so he hires an apprentice, Mortimer, to mind the shop and Death's adopted daughter, Ysabell(?!?!) The first time we meet Albert, Death's man servant.
- 1991 Reaper Man Buy it from Amazon.com
Death gets fired for taking a vacation (see Mort). So while Death is having "the time of his life" living out a Clint Eastwood western no one is dying properly and the excess life-force is building up. The Wizards of the Unseen University have to deal with Zombies, overzealous compost heaps, incarnate cuss words and a life-form that feeds on cities. (Your going to love that one).
- 1994 Soul Music Buy it from Amazon.com
Pterry does Rock'n'Roll. Well... Music With Rocks In at least. That Buddy Holly, he looks a little Elvish to me. Death is missing again and this time Susan (Mortimer and Ysabell's daughter) inherits the job. See how many reference you can catch
before checking the Annotated guide. L-Space
- 1996 Hogfather Buy it from Amazon.com
What does the tooth fairy do with all those teeth? How do you know the sun will still rise without the Hogfather? Someone has hired Mr. Teatime to assassinate the Hogfather. Susan has a job as a nanny. Death is doing the Hogfather's rounds. An excess of belief is causing some very strange manifestations. And if someone doesn't stop Mr. Teatime the sun might not rise.
-
- 1989 Guards! Guards!
The first Watch book. Young Carrot, a human raised by dwarfs, goes to the big city to "have a man made of him". A secret Cult is summoning dragons. A good send up of ceremonial magic. Lots of Tolken references. Pterry takes shots at government, politics and Sword and Sourcery standards. I think this is the
first time we get good a good look at Lord Vetinari, the Patrician
- 1993 Men At Arms Buy it from Amazon.com
The Watch has an affirmative action program, dwarfs, trolls, women, and the undead (differently living?). People are being murdered in an unusual way. (Unusual for the Disc World at least.) Leonard of Quirm has invented the Gonne, so called
because when you point it things and pull the trigger they're gonne. More details about the rightful King of Anhk-Morpork. Some "lone gunman" references. Political satire
- 1996 Feet of Clay Buy it from Amazon.com
Someone is poisoning the Patrician, and someone is murdering harmless old men. More details about the works of "Bloody Stupid" Johnson. Are Golems alive? The rightful king of Anhk-Morpork is once again an issue. We meet are first gnome since "Light Fantastic" And there is a Gargoyle in the Watch (they are very good at watching). Political satire
- 1997 Jingo Buy it from Amazon.com
Oh boy is this political satire. Did you ever get the impression that Pterry is anti war? Can any sane person be in favor of war? We get to see more of Leonard of Quirm. And Sir Vimes gets to know what would have happened if he had put his
duties before the welfare of his men (werewolves?). Stuff about racism and more "lone gunman" references.
- 1999 The Fifth Elephant Order Terry Pratchett's The Fifth Elephant Today!
Sir Vimes is sent to Uberwald as the AnhkMorpork Ambasador to attend the crowning of the Dwarvish Low King. (AnhkMorpork has a vested intrest in the fat deposits of the area). But the Patrician would not send a policman unless he knew that a crime was going to be commited. Luckily the Watch Comanders wife was bred for political negotiations. Pterry is having fun writing detective novels with a healthly side of political satire.
- 2000 The Truth
William de Worde has been marked by the first movable type printing press in Anhk-Morpork to be the Discworld's first reporter. (Although the dwarfs did try to stop the press before it hit him.) I classified this as a Watch book because the Watch is in it and it is a detective story. It is not independant enough to have a catigory of it's own but it doesn't focus on the Watch. If Pterry writes more books about The Anhk-Morpork Times it may justify it's own catigory.
Other Books
-
- 1971 The Carpet People Buy it from Amazon.co.uk
Pterry wrote this, his first novel, when he was 17. And rewrote it again in 1992 with his older self listed as co-author. As he says the first version was about Kings and Wars and Heroes while the second version is about not having Kings and Wars and Heroes.
- 1976 The Dark Side of the Sun
Classic Pterry. A young man on a quest across the universe. Mythopoetic Science Fiction with his trade mark satire.
- 1981 Strata
His first shot at a disc world. Very different from where he ended up but you can see the beginnings of his favorite themes: religion, magic, quantum physics.
-
- 1989 The Unadulterated Cat
A humorous look at cat books. Puts me in mind of the "Achmed the I Just Get These Headache's Book of Humorous Cat Stories" mentioned in "Moving Pictures". Pterry's usual wry sense of humor.
- 1990 Good Omens Buy it from Amazon.com
The nice and Accurate prophecies of Agnice Nutter, Witch. Co-authored with Neil Gaiman. All the way from Creation to the End Times. Pterry does "The Omen". Does the Anti-Christ have to be Bad?
