Apples au Gratin
Ingredients
- 6 heaping cups sliced and cored tart apples (about 6-8 large apples)
- 2 Tbsp flour
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- dash of: cloves, nutmeg, and salt
- 2 Tbsp
- 1 (2lb) sauerkraut
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 1/2 tsp dry mustard
- 1 lb mild cheddar cheese, grated
- 1 cup bread crumbs
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
Instructions
- Rinse and strain the sauerkraut.
- Sauté the onions in the butter until clear and soft.
- Add the dry mustard and sauerkraut. Heat through and set aside.
- Toss the sliced apples with the flour, spices, and honey.
- Mix the cheese, bread crumbs, and chopped nuts. Set aside 1 cup.
- Mix the cheese, bead crumbs, and nuts in with the apples.
- Mix in the sauerkraut and onions.
- Put everything in a shallow casserole dish.
- Sprinkle the remaining bread crumb and cheese mixture over the top.
- Bake at 350°F for 40 min until the top is crispy.

I got this from "The Enchanted Broccoli Forest" by Mollie Katzen. This is a savory side dish not a desert.
