Ballyferriter Church Records

The National Library of Ireland holds microfilmed church registers for nearly every parish in Ireland. Their address is:

The registers for Ballyferriter are believed to exist back to February 1807 for baptisms, and January 1808 for marriages. However, the library may not have the earliest of these records. The registers appear on microfilm rolls P 4274 and P 4275 (Ferriter Parish).

The records themselves were written in Latin, but as most of the information consists of names, this should not be an impediment. The baptismal entries give the names of the child's parents, including the mother's maiden name, but the marriage records omit the parents' names. Burial records were not generally kept by the Catholic Church in Ireland.

At the church in Ballyferriter itself, St. Vincent's, there is an index to the parish registers, which contains much of the information in the registers themselves. The current parish priest is Father Hickey, who is said to be extremely helpful.

The Maritime History Archive at the Memorial University of Newfoundland at St. John's has microfilm copies of church registers for several Irish parishes, including Ballyferriter. Due to the difficulties involved in viewing the records, and the fact that the LDS Church does not currently hold copies of the registers, the most practical method of making the information available to more people would be to collect and publish records of baptisms and marriages that have been previously transcribed by individuals during the course of their own research.
